"Kurt, I have something to tell you," Mercedes said, nerves evident in her eyes as she lowered herself down onto the bed next to her best friend.
"Ooh, and what might that be?" Kurt teased, clearly intrigued by Mercedes' serious tone.
The girl shuffled around a little bit, getting comfortable and giving herself an extra moment to prepare.
"I've sort of been dating Sam," Mercedes blurted out quickly before latching her teeth onto her bottom lip, as though she was scared of how Kurt would take the news.
There was a pause in conversation as Kurt merely quirked an eyebrow.
"What?" the nervous girl asked, confused by her best friend's reaction.
"Is that all?"
"Well yes…"
"I mean thank god we can finally talk about it but that's not exactly news."
"You knew?"
"Mercedes, please," Kurt closed his eyes and smirked, almost offended at her question. "Who are you talking to? Also, you guys are ridiculously obvious about it. I mean, you're just helping him baby-sit? And all of those times this summer that you've been too busy to go shopping. Shopping, Mercedes. Not to mention at that party the other week when you both just happened to end up sleeping in the same room together, after spending all night making gaga eyes at each other."
She blushed, her eyes giving away how smitten she was with her new boyfriend as she thought about the moments Kurt was mentioning.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"I knew there must be a reason you hadn't told me, so I was waiting for you to be ready."
"Does anyone else know?"
Kurt pondered that for a moment, leaning back into the soft cushions that decorated his bed.
"Well, Blaine knows, obviously, and Tina might have an idea, but I'm not sure about the others. Finn's completely clueless of course and everyone else is all so wrapped up in themselves that I doubt they've noticed."
Mercedes seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as she settled back into the pillows, close to the pale boy beside her.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Kurt asked quietly. "And why don't you want everyone to know?"
"I'm scared that they'll laugh at me. And after all the time's I've acted like the diva that I am, going on about how I don't need a man, I wasn't sure what you would think."
"Oh Mercedes," Kurt moved to put his arm around his best friend, holding her close. "The others will be happy for you. Sure, Santana is Sam's ex and she's kind of crazy but everyone else will at least be happy for you, you deserve to be happy. And as for me, I'm so excited that you've found someone, as long as he treats you how you deserve to be treated."
"He does."
"Excellent, now, before we start planning our first double date, you need to tell me all the juicy details," he shuffled so that he was on his side, facing his best girl, and grinning. "What's it like to kiss that trouty mouth?"
"Kurt!" Mercedes exclaimed, hitting her friend lightly on the arm as she dissolved into giggles. She eventually composed herself and began to share all about their first date, their first kiss and her fears about whether or not it was too soon to say 'I love you'.
Kurt grinned and squealed in all the right places and the two spent the rest of the sleepover discussing how marvellous it was to be in love.
