It's Your Fault

A/N: Yes, I'm actually posting. I've been taking a break from FF to focus on my original work, but I got randomly inspired and wrote this whole thing in about 5 frantic minutes, so what are you going to do? I hope you like it! Reviews make me happy!

First the voices came, the endless whispers gnawing at his soul. The words cut into him night and day, causing him perpetual pain.
It's your fault, they told him. Everything is your fault.
At first he'd tried to block the voices out. He put his hands over his ears, hoping to stop the noise from entering his head. But it was no use; the voices were inside of him, inside of his own mind, reminding him of his sinister deed.
Two people dead, his two best friends were dead. And it was entirely his fault.
Eventually the voices managed to do their job. They'd convinced him of the truth that he had known all along, that he was just trying to battle with. It was his fault, every last bit of it.
If he hadn't changed secret keepers, this would not have happened. Lily and James would be alive and able to care for their son. Peter would not have betrayed them because he would not have been given the chance to.
And he would not have ended up in this hellhole, surrounded constantly by the cold, joyless atmosphere. The air cool air knifed his lungs with every desperate gasp he took. The dementors circled his cell, sucking away his every last good feeling and memory. And he just sat hunched over, head to his knees and hands on his ears, too weak to fight it.
Maybe one day it would get better. He'd heard it said that the first year in Azkaban was the worst… after that you were either dead or truly insane, not able to feel or recognize the pain than surrounded you.
But until that happened, until he was able to find sanctuary in death or in his own deranged mind, he would have to deal with the voices, every day whispering the truth that was slowly torturing him.
It's your fault.
