Mr. Poe was returning to the bank from an extended lunch break. It was around 2:13 PM. Passing a remote general store in the countryside, he stopped abruptly. There, right in front of his own car, was a different car. He could see three figures moving around inside the other car, and he knew they must be the Baudelaires.
He looked left, and then right. In both directions, a railroad track extended as far as he could see. There was a switching device about 100 yards to the right. With horror, he realized that the other car was parked squarely on the track, and that a train would soon be passing through the area. "Violet! Klaus! It's Mr. Poe! I've come to save you!" he cried.
Violet heard him. "It's Mr. Poe. I think he's going to pull the track switch." she said.
Being far stronger than the children, Mr. Poe was able to quickly throw the switch just as the crossing signal activated. "We're safe now." Klaus said.
Count Olaf emerged from the store after the train had passed. "Hello, Olaf. I see you've just attempted to murder these three kids in your care. Lucky I was there." Mr. Poe said.
With the footage from the security camera backing up Mr. Poe's story, Olaf was sentenced to life in prison. All appeals were quickly rejected.
