Edelweiss

Here's a short songfic to the lyrics of the Austrian folk song 'Edelweiss', most commonly known for it's feature in the Sound of Music. I think this encompasses Beatrix & Steiner's future. Steiner's POV.

Edelweiss,

Edelweiss,

Every morning you greet me.

There she was, my Beatrix, my sweet flower. My edelweiss. I couldn't believe I was this lucky, I had loved her for so long, and now she had agreed to marry me. It had certainly changed my ideas about love, it really is true that love will find a way. Because love had found a way, and I wasn't about to question why.

Small & white,

Clean & bright,

You look happy to meet me.

She smiled that sweet smile as she walked down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Tot. She looked so beautiful in her flowing white dress, as white as edelweiss itself. And as delicate as well, as I watched her a lump came into my throat, at that moment I just wanted to hold her close in my arms & never let her go. Her expression was trusting as she gazed up at me. I did not want to betray that trust.

Blossom of snow,

May you bloom & grow,

Bloom & grow forever.

She said her vows & I said mine. I did not bother to keep the emotion out of my voice. I wanted her to know how much I loved her. And how happy I wanted to make her. I wanted her to bloom like the edelweiss in her bouquet. I gladly pledged my life to her. To my joy, when she said her vows I could detect the same emotion in her voice, and the look on her face confirmed it. We shared that moment together, and for an instant the crowd & the church melted away as I kissed her softly & gently.

Edelweiss,

Edelweiss,

Bless my homeland forever.

Everyone was singing as we walked out of the church., her arm in mine. When we were out in the sunlight, she turned and threw her bouquet. It flew high in the air & was caught by Quina, who promptly ate it. But one bit of edelweiss fluttered up, & landed delicately in Beatrix's hair. She lifted her hand to remove it, but I gently stopped her.

"Leave it there," I said. "It looks just right." And she did so. We stood with our arms around each other, looking out at the sun setting over Alexandria. This was another thing that united us, our love for our country. It bound us together & gave us strength, but I knew I had two things to protect now, and I would do it with all my heart.
