This book is set in an alternate universe and somethings will differ from canon events in the Harry Potter universe. MAEVE MACLEOD HAD BEEN TOLD ALL HER life that there's no such thing as bad blood. Her had parents taught her that everyone must be treated equally and Maeve had been more than willing to believe them.
Her parents were kind people and Maeve thought they were the best people on the planet. They loved her brothers, her sisters, and herself so very much; she believed they would do anything for them. And perhaps, they would've had she received her Hogwarts Acceptance Letter.
Maeve is a Squib. A filthy stain on her family's reputation.
Her parents had lied, there is such thing as bad blood and Maeve has it.
BELLATRIX BLACK is the eldest daughter of Pureblood couple, Cygnus and Druella Black. All her life she's been taught that she's Pureblood royalty, and above all, she's taught not to consort with bad blood. The Half-Bloods, the Half-Breeds, the Muggle-Borns, the Muggles. This lesson has been taught to her more times than the Cruciatus Curse has been aimed at her.
And, Bellatrix is okay with believing what her parents have told her, she's perfectly fine with believing that she's on the top of the food chain. But, that doesn't stop her from wanting more.
She wants to know why she must be this way, she wants to know why they must believe in these things. Bellatrix wants answers that are more than just a slap or a curse.
Bellatrix wants to know what makes her blood so pure and others' so bad.
When she finds Maeve Macleod stumbling around the sunflower fields of Almerry Castle, Bellatrix finds not only the answers to her questions but a friend as well.
Her parents decide to take Maeve in as a maid and soon Bellatrix finds herself questioning more than just her family's beliefs. As the years go by, one question continues to plague her mind:
Is Maeve Macleod really the one with the bad blood or is it Bellatrix Black?

ALL HER LIFE, MAEVE 'MAE' MACLEOD HAS been surrounded by unconditional love. With two older siblings who cherished and shared everything with her, parents who taught her to love and taught her to treat others equally, and three younger siblings she doted upon, Mae thought she had the picture perfect family and perhaps she did. And then, unlike her two older siblings, Mae doesn't receive her Hogwarts Acceptance letter and suddenly that unconditional love becomes very conditional.
Labelled a Squib, Mae is thrown from her once loving home and onto the the streets of Fionnphort, Scotland. With no other family to turn to, Mae is lost and confused. She doesn't understand how her parents could just toss her aside because of something so trivial, they had always told her that they loved her. They had always told her that blood-status doesn't matter so why did the fact she had no magic change everything; wasn't their love enough?
Running to Almerry Island becomes Mae's best bet especially when her parents refuse to listen to her pleas to come home. Mae knows very little about the island except for the fact that Almerry Castle which sits on the highest hill on the island seems to be abandoned.
Almerry Castle would've been a good place for Mae to hide out in while she figures out how to deal with her lack of magic but Almerry Castle is the complete opposite of abandoned. The ancient and most noble house of Black make a home there and they're very territorial over it. And Mae's decision to wander their sunflower fields just happens to be another in a series of unfortunate events that have been plaguing her since her birthday.
Bellatrix Black is the one to find Maeve Macleod and despite everything she's been taught, Bellatrix saves her. Whether it be fate or a sudden burst of courage to question her parents' beliefs, Bellatrix finds herself bound to Mae with an undying loyalty that Mae is quick to return.
Despite the fact that Mae is a filthy Squib and Bellatrix is trying to be the perfect Pureblood daughter, the two girls become attached at the hip and as the years go by they begin to wonder if their friendship — their love is enough to keep them together?
