The darkness is overwhelming, and you don't wonder where his body is anymore because you can feel it touching yours, barely.
"You chose me," he repeats for the 8th time that night.
You've been counting.
"Yes," you repeat for the 8th time, too.
"Why?" he asks you, and this question catches you by surprise.
You just lay there for a second, but then remember that he wants an answer.
"You took my heart a couple months ago, and I never got it back," you pause and try to find his face in the darkness, "Last night, you gave me a choice. A choice to stay with a man that I knew could never have my heart, or the choice to stay with you, the man who I knew could never give my heart back. And I know this may sounda little selfish, but I couldn't just let my heart roam around alone with you."
Derek stiffles a laugh as they lie there, the silence piercing through the air like so many other times.
"So," he starts, "does that mean you want your heart back?"
"No," you tell him, your voice cracking in your slightly desperate attempt to not touch him withyour hands, "You can keep it."
But when he rolls over on top of you, barely making out his smile, your attempt fails, and you forget to remind him that you're both on top of Doc's grave.
