There he was, holding her in a tender embrace, whispering sweet nothings into her ear, his voice filled with love and adoration. She watched from a distance as he gently combed his claws through her hair, a pool of ebony reflected by the pale moonlight. Her lips trembled as she fought to keep the tears from spilling, fearing that the salty scent would give away her position. They stood together, arms wrapped around each other so tightly that it was hard to tell which limbs belonged to whom. Her heart welled up in jealously. She would have given anything to be in her shoes because at this moment, she was holding her whole world. Unable to bear it much longer, she turned her back upon the lovers and slipped quietly into the consuming darkness. It was only when she was sure that she was hidden by the obscurity of the night she let the wave of despondency wash over her. She fell to the ground and the tears fell freely, tainting the dirt beneath her, slowly turning it into a pool of mud. Her whole body shook as her sobs reached a crescendo; her wails pierced through the soundless night. How did this happen? Hadn't he promised he'd be with her forever? Once upon a time, he had held her the exact same way as he was holding the wench now, told her he loved her and meant it, and raked his claws through her hair lovingly, tenderly… But that was fifty years ago. Ashamed of her sudden sign of weakness, she quickly wiped the tears away and stood up. She turned and spared a final glance at the direction where the lovers stood and continued to aimlessly wander through the forest, her path illuminated by her faithful soul collectors.
Author's Note: I know this is a short one, but I think it really reflects the love triangle between Kikyo, Kagome and Inuyasha. Personally, I'm a supporter of the Kagome/Inu shipping but I've always wondered, beyond that stoic exterior, how Kikyo really felt about Inuyasha. Rarely do I find fanfics that explore the relationship between Inuyasha and Kikyo, so I decided to write one myself. This is my first stab at writing an Inuyasha fanfic so critique/reviews would be great! Thanks for reading!
