House of Glass
"There are unresolved feelings on both sides."
Emily's words had been running around your mind at high speed for the last couple of days, pushing and pulling at your concentration, your determination to neglect the urge to outrun any doubt. It had come to you as a surprise, just like a perfect punch in the first round of a safe fight.
Emily was privy to an epiphany that had began to rummage its way into the open since you dreaded to tell Jill that you were seeing someone else.
The realization might have come as a surprise but the truth you begin to understand had been simmering underneath the surface as long as you had been living in the Hamptons.
You had not realized any change in the way you felt for Jill; in the way you looked at her; or how you missed the smell of her shampoo on your pillow, the soft voice of hers in your ear and her porcelain skin on your own.
You had not realized any difference at all because nothing had ever changed to begin with; and that was why you were surprised when someone dared you to take a leap of faith.
After your futile attempt at commitment in New York you had tied a knot around your heart; building a solid castle of glass around it you had come to realize. When you first met her at the beginning of the summer, you were drawn to her beauty, her intelligence, her dreams and the unshakable faith that medicine can and will do good.
You did not fall madly in love with her, but your feelings were genuine and unfolding. She was your best friend, your confident, an incessant source of trust and comfort.
You watched as the door slowly closed behind her and let go of the breath you had been holding.
"I miss you, too." You whispered into the afternoon breeze.
