Cora. Pregnant. Again.
Robert had to take a deep breath before letting the idea sink in.
They were far from being young newlyweds, the baby clothes and baby paraphernalia had been put away years ago.
The child could be another girl, but it could also be a boy.
A son. An heir. The estate would not have to be entailed away.
But the question was now about Matthew.
Matthew was an intelligent and capable young man, and the entire family considered Matthew and Isobel as a part of their inner circle.
To disappoint Matthew by informing him that after all of these months, he was no longer needed would not be easy. But Matthew had his career as a barrister, he would survive.
The only thing, Robert told himself to they could all do is wait. Wait until the child came into the world.
But the child was not to be, as they would all find out.
The doctor had examined Cora and found no plausible reason that this child would not come into the world as healthy and strong as his sisters had.
There had been another miscarriage, but that had been years ago, early in their marriage. Cora's father had died and the voyage home from New York had been difficult. The doctor at the time had counseled him that Cora needed time to heal from the loss of her father and of her child. He was right; Mary was born a year later.
Few people had seen him cry other than his family. Bates catching him crying was unplanned, but he knew enough to keep it to himself.
They would survive, as they had before. Matthew would continue on as his heir and in time, all would return to normal.
