As a newbie to Runescape, I (Donna Louu) completed the initial tutorial, Unstable Foundations, and started planning my first quest. Many of the interesting-sounding quests were off limits, since I hadn't earned enough points for them. I selected Imp Catcher, which sounded easy enough, and read some information in Sal's walk-through guide for this quest. It seemed simple enough, just kill a few imps and get back the beads for the wizard. But, things got complicated….
I found the Wizard's Tower on the world map and started off from Lumbridge Castle. Along the way (I tend to get distracted), I stopped and gathered a few chickens, some bones, and even some cabbage (I like cabbage) to accumulate some spending money, since you can never have enough spare change. I went to the Exchange in Varrock, traded my stuff for a little cash, and headed back on the road. Crossing through a dark (but not very expensive) forest, I eventually ambled down to the Tower.
As expected, the Wizard's Tower was a bit intimidating and confusing, so I spoke to any wizard who would listen to me. There were a couple on the first floor, but they were uncooperative. I stumbled into the basement and got totally lost, ultimately using the teleporting option to get back to familiar territory and once again returning to the Tower.
At long last, after learning that I must ask nicely, with a PLEASE, I spoke with Wizard Mizgog, who explained about needing his four colored beads back from the imps that held them. If I wanted to help, he gave me two options: either killing the imps, or buying replacement beads from another player. The imps are in cahoots with Wizard Grayzag, a neighbor of Mizgog. Grayzag is always busy plotting his next nefarious plan. I headed out into the forest and found some imps, but realized that I didn't have the firepower (or willpower or interest) to kill them. (I really must learn how to live in this kingdom of Runescape!). That meant that my bank account would now pay for itself, so I left the Tower and went to the Exchange at Varrock to buy some beads.
To make a very long story a little shorter, I bought my four colored beads, with a little bit of haggling (and even some refunds) at the Exchange. The last transaction seemed to take forever (like the buyer knew that he could slow down my progress), and one of the beads seemed overpriced, but I had the coins. So, with four beads in hand, I proceeded back to the Tower, stopping along the way to collect some more eggs and vegetables for resale.
At the Wizard's Tower, I got lost again, back into the dungeons in the basement. [Note to self—recognize the simple difference between climbing UP and climbing DOWN a ladder, dummy!] The basement is an interesting place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Going up to the top level, I was cornered by Wizard Grayzag, who was rather rude and told me that I didn't know what I was doing. Eventually, I got away from him and found Mizgog. Although Mizgog was very friendly and happy to see me, Grayzag must have rattled me, because I dropped some of the beads in trying to give them to Wizard Mizgog. I had to leave the Tower and quickly find another source of the missing beads, but that was no problem at all, since I had leftover coins.
Returning at last to the Tower, Wizard Mizgog was very happy to be given his missing beads, and he rewarded me with an Amulet of Accuracy in addition to 875 Magic XP and 1 Quest Point. Now it is time to figure out how to best use my prizes, and which of many possible Quests it is time to begin.
