Disclaimer: I don't know if Stella's kid was a girl or boy, or what his/her name is. So, read on, and see what I had to supervise with. Also, I have like no idea how to write Kiwolski!
Stella clutched her daughter's blanket over her face and ears,
trying to block the sound of Stanley's screaming.
It didn't work. The pathetic cries of, "Stella, Stella!" went
right through her soul, threatening to tear her apart. Why can't he stop?
she begged silently. Her daughter started to cry, and the sounds combining
sounded awful.
Stanley carried on for several more minutes, until the front
door of their apartment slammed and the men walked out.
"Let's meet later." One guy said, and Stella couldn't quite
make out the voice.
Finally she worked up the courage to peek out a crack in the
front door. Mitch was walking slowly out to where Stanley was standing,
and then, inches away, he stopped.
Time seemed to stop between them, then Mitch's fist hit Kiwolski,
and for the first time Stanley went down in a fight. The other men had
to grab hold of Mitch to keep him away, but his shouts rang through the
street.
"You drove Blanche away! You.. You started that fight that made
her leave-"
"Hey, you weren't on her side that same night. And it wasn't
that big of a deal." Stanley argued. He had gotten up and maintained his
status.
Stella left her daughter in the apartment and walked out into
the steps. "Not that big of a deal, Stanley?" Her voice was cool, and she
walked down the steps the same way she did that night when she was going
to leave her husband waiting on the steps, screaming.
His face was half twisted with relief, half with fury. For a
minute it reminded her of that time he had hit her.
"Blanche came here needing help. She came because everyone had
turned their back on her. It was because of people like you that she had
a problem, and you did nothing to help it."
The men chose that moment to leave then, and while the street
was crowded and busy, it seemed as if they were the only one's on the block.
"Let's go back inside, Stella."
He doesn't understand at all, does he? Stella thought bitterly.
"I am never going back in there again. There's more out there for me. I'm
going home, home to where I grew up."
He put his hand on her shoulder, wincing when she pulled away.
"Weren't we happy before your sister showed up?"
"I thought so, but now I'm not so sure that we ever had anything.
I wanted to get away from reality, and you came into town. I only stayed
for this long because I felt something false, and was convinced that eventually,
Stanley.. Eventually, things would even out. That you would get a real
job, like you promised." She shook her head. "I want to see what I could
of become."
He looked so sad and embarassed Stella almost regretted what
she had said.
Almost.
But with Stanley, what he was feeling one second could instantly
change. She instinctually moved back when he looked angry, but it was too
late.
"Stop it, you hear me?" he shouted, shaking and clutching her
hand so tightly she thought it would fall off. "Blanche brainwashed you.
She wants you to be believe that. But I know this. And you would never
leave." he let go of her. "What about the baby? We haven't even named her."
"Blanche. Her name is Blanche." she murmured.
"What? What?"
Stella walked back to the upstairs apartment and got her daughter.
She didn't look back as she boarded the old red streetcar down the block,
where tourists and natives came and went.
A Streetcar Named Desire.
