"Like a secret." She said and smiled with satisfaction.
"Why does it have to be a secret?" I frowned at her enthusiasm.
"Not a secret, like a secret."
"What?"
"Like a secret between you and I."
There was a twinkle in her blue eyes as she bounced on her toes with excitement. For a moment I was mesmerized by her movements, how light her body seemed to be, the way the torch light danced on her blonde curls. Shaking myself a little I remembered the thread of the conversation and once again furrowed my brow in confusion.
"Are you … ashamed of me?" I inquired softly.
A quick kiss on the lips answered that.
"Then why a secret?"
She rolled her eyes, "No, Neville, not a secret, like a secret."
Exasperated I leaned against the wall and covered my face with my hands, groaning loudly.
"I don't want to keep it a secret."
"Then don't." She replied happily.
"But you said…"
"Look at me." The dreamy quality was gone from her voice and I felt her fingers tugging my hands away from my face.
Obediently I met her gaze.
"What?"
"You and I… we aren't exciting."
"You know what? I'm going back to my dorm." I whispered trying to get past her.
With a thud I found myself shoved back against the wall, her hands on my shoulders.
"I find us exciting. You find us exciting. No one else does."
"Luna…"
"It's not like they would even notice anyway."
It was true. Neither of us were very well-liked, but it seemed a shame not to tell anyone about this.
"I just thought," She continued, "that it might be fun… to pretend like they would."
"What do you mean?"
Very slowly she came closer until I could feel the warmth of her skin through my robes, "You know, sneak out late at night, meet in dark halls and behind tapestries, the things normal people do, only us."
"You mean like we are now?"
She laughed and kissed my cheek, "Yes."
"We can't meet here every time," I managed as she placed airy kisses over my jaw and down my neck.
"Mmm."
"Other kids use this room. Sometimes we'll have to go other places… maybe …" My voice trailed off as she grazed her teeth over my ear.
"What were you saying?" Her breath was warm.
"What?"
She giggled, "It's late, we should get back."
"Oh, yes, of course." Regaining my composure, I straightened my robes and tried to fix my ruffled hair.
"I'll walk you to the stairs?" She asked reaching for my hand.
Smiling happily I took it and we began the journey back to our dorms.
When I opened the door I found Ron and Harry still awake and sitting on Ron's bed talking quietly. They looked at me oddly, but said nothing until after I had changed into my night clothes and climbed into bed.
"Where were you?" Ron asked curiously.
"What?"
"Where were you?" Harry repeated.
"Nowhere."
"Come on, don't lie, you aren't any good at it." Ron persisted.
"Just out." I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling.
"Strange if you ask me." I head Harry whisper and felt a grin tug at my mouth.
"Got a girl, I'll bet." The other answered.
"Who?"
In my head I saw her face again, smiling, laughing.
"He'll slip up soon enough. You know Neville, he couldn't keep a secret if he tried."
I could hear her again, "Not a secret, like a secret."
"Just like a secret." I mumbled to myself and drifted off to sleep.
