They honestly thought they could catch me? Idiots. That old man couldn't even write down my name. All things to think about some other time when a building wasn't exploding in my face. I ran as fast as I could away from the collapsing building. I might have lost the Death Note, but the battle is far from over. Exploding crap was fun, but I sure as hell should've found a safe place to hide. My hand reached to the side of my face. It felt strange and burning. I couldn't bear the pain.

"Ahhh!" I yelled, clutching my face. I kept running, trying to soothe the burn. Finally, I had arrived at a close friend's house. I opened the door slowly, trying not to make a sound.

"Hey." Matt said. "Mello, I know it's you." I walked through the doorway, and stood before him. "Oh my God! What happened?"

"Don't get involved with the Kira case. It's for your own good." I told him. I felt ashamed of my 'loss', but I felt secure knowing that Matt would always be on my side.

"How the hell did that happen?" he asked me. I sighed.

"Explosion." I answered simply.

"You have to stop exploding stuff that's right in front of you." he snickered. He handed me a mirror so I could see the damage.

"Holy sh*t!" I screamed. Half of my face had melted in the explosion. I noticed Matt staring at me strangely. "What do you want?"

"Wow. I thought you knew how you looked. You were so calm before." he said.

"This…" I said pointing to my face, "is where I draw the line. Kira has taken L and numerous other people to their graves, but he can wait. Yagami will die first."

"Are you sure that's a smart idea? I mean, with some makeup-"

"Do I look gay to you?" Matt simply giggled in response. "You know what, don't answer that." I could feel his eyes looking at my clothes trough those goggles.

"I told you, it's not that bad! Just focus on Kira."

"Matt, stay out of this. I don't want you to get hurt too." I sighed. "You have chocolate, right?" he tossed me a chocolate bar from the kitchen.

"If you want revenge, I'll help you. I have nothing better to do."

"And that's really the only reason? Look Matt, this is a huge case. I don't want you to get hurt, or even killed. This isn't a game."

"I never said it was. But I want to help you. It's not like Kira hasn't killed anyone important to me." I peeled the wrapper off of the chocolate bar. "Are you the only one left?"

"What?" I asked.

"The only one alive in the mafia. It's just you?" he asked interested. I sat down on the dark brown couch next to me.

"I think so. I didn't stick around to find out." He sat with me.

"So now the race has begun between you and Near, right?" he asked.

"Do you think I would really turn down an offer to crush his chances of beating me?" I smiled, and took a bite of the chocolate. "The race has begun."

A/N: My first Death Note fic! Yay! So tell me what you think, did it suck completely, or was it awsomriffic? If that's a word.

Death Note does not belong to me, and though I want it, I do not claim it.
