Donna arrived at the office to find Harvey already busy on his desk. Last night, moments after he uttered those words and left her apartment, she debated on whether to confront him or to just let his statement pass. She decided to do the latter because she was terrified and liked their relationship as it is but, when she wake up that morning, she realized that if Harvey didn't want to disturb their status quo, he could have easily given her a different answer.
So, Donna set aside her hesitation and determinedlywalk into Harvey's office and waited for him to notice her. When finally he looked up at her, he said:
"Donna, I'm busy."
"You ran away, Harvey," she replied quickly, "you ran away but not before telling me that you love me."
He frowned at her, surprised that she decided to talk to him about it. But, he knew her and he was aware right after he said those words that she would most likely press him about it. He heaved a deep breath.
"I don't see why this comes as a surprise to you. You are the closest thing to a family that I have," he said tenderly. "As far as I'm concerned, it's just you and me, Donna."
There it was: another ambiguous remark and Donna knew better than to push him. Besides, she was scared herself and didn't want to risk whatever they have with something so uncertain. Clearly, what was said was said in a moment of vulnerability, something both of them had already recovered from, albeit only slightly.
"Thank you, Harvey," she replied and made her way out. Before closing the door, however, she turned back at him and said, "And, for the record, I love you, too."
Harvey nodded in acknowledgment. They held each other's gaze for a while and went back to their work.
And, just like that another moment, another chance at happiness had slipped their hands but whatever status quo they had before those words were uttered had now undeniably changed. There was ambiguity on the surface but beneath it all, Donna and Harvey knew that their love for one another is certain and that they will be in each other's life forever.
As much as I would love them to hook up already, I think these two will most likely pass up on it again but, well, there's time.
