Every morning, Pat Clifton and I would travel across town, to pick up the mail. As we drove by, the towns' people would a cry out, "Morning Postman Pat."

That's what they all called him. It was a name given to him by a four year child, one day and I guess it stuck. He would stop outside mail centre, where he'd pick up the day's parcels. Then when he returned to the car he would say in a chirpy voice, "Right then, Jess. On we go!" as he patted my black and white head. I would purr and swish my tail happily.

Then he'd start his engine and make the long trip to Sodor Island to pick up the mail from the train. Today it was Thomas that met us at the station, smiling as he waited for the Fat Controller, Topham Hatt to pass the mail onto Pat.

They would spend ten minutes chatting, happily as we all looked on. We all could see the looks exchanged between the two, but neither of them could see it. There was more than a friendship between these two. I could see it in the glow that was always in Pat's face, when he would finally make it back to the can with the day's mail.

He would start singing as he drove, delivering all the mail to the towns' people. Everyone thought he was such a happy chap. I guess I'm the only one who really knows why. Correction, Thomas the Tank Engine, Percy and all the other trains, Toby the Tram and I all knew. No one ever thought to tell anybody what we saw. Why would we? They're all engines and I am just a black and white cat.

Everyday that Pat and Topham met, they would deny they enjoyed their encounters as anything more than a friendly chat between friends, but everyday they would let their stares linger on each other, taking in everything about each other, just a little longer than the day before. Then when they shook hands, they would hold each other's hands longer than they should and longer than they had previously.

Feelings are growing between them, stronger than either of them will ever admit, even to themselves. How long, I wonder will it go on for until one reveals exactly how he feels for the other.
