I was reclined against the soft white couch in the Cullen's living room, flicking aimlessly through the hundreds of channels, trying to find a show that was somewhat bearable to watch. Finally settling for a movie that was already half-over, I tossed the remote onto the couch beside me. It was then I noticed Emmett, shrugging out of a soaking wet coat just inside the door.

'Hey Emmett, how was your hunting trip?'

'Fine, thanks. What about your weekend? Not too lonely, I hope?' I shook my head with a smile, but secretly wished that my weekend had been a bit more eventful. The whole Cullen family had gone on a hunting trip in one of the forests near Vancouver, and Charlie had gone to Seattle for a professional development course on Friday night. Having the choice of either sitting at home or at the Cullen's, I immediately packed an overnight bag and settled in to Edward's room for the weekend. But, despite being in my boyfriend's house for the last two days, I hadn't seen heads or tails of him or any of his family since they left early Saturday morning.

Emmett made his way across the room in a split second, settling down in one of the armchairs next to the couch moments later. We sat in companionable silence for a few minutes, both casually watching the movie playing on the plasma screen TV on the wall. But, sometime around five o'clock, somewhere in the distance I noticed a sound in the distance. The distinguishable screech of tyres against bitumen and the faint drunken cries of men echoed from the direction of the road.

'Emmett?'

'Hmm?'

'Can you tell what that sound is?'

'It's a group of kids from school, in the year below you? From what I can tell, they just finished their last exam, and are planning on going clubbing.' I must have looked concerned, because Emmett gave me a reassuring smile.

'Don't worry, Bells, they're planning on driving through to Port Angeles. And besides, they probably don't even know where the entry to this place is…' Emmett trailed off, looking in the direction of the road. His expression was worried as his heightened senses overheard the drunkards' conversation.

'What is it?'

'They've found the driveway…and one of them knows it leads to our place…' He continued to listen intently, before an expression that made my stomach drop crossed his face. In a slightly hollow voice, he explained what he had heard.

'They've decided to come down here and "teach us stuck-up snobs a lesson". They want to trash the house.' Emmett's voice was dripping with disgust, but he didn't seem nearly as concerned as I did. But, I guess, he didn't have as much need to be concerned. He was immortal, after all, and not vulnerable to anything they could do. I, on the other hand, wasn't feeling quite so comfortable.

'What'll we do?'

'I'll go out there and get rid of them. You, on the other hand, will stay here. The last thing I want is Edward hunting me down because I allowed you to get hurt by some drunken idiots in our very front yard.'

Before I could protest, Emmett had left the house without bothering to grab his raincoat, the door swinging shut behind him. I hurried to the window, just in time to see a large black Impala screech out of the driveway and skid to a stop in front of the house. I recognised the boys immediately, if not by name then by face; typical jock-types who cared more about their reputations than they did their education. They stumbled out of the car, but hadn't taken more than a few wobbling steps before they were confronted with Emmett, who was looking impressively menacing.

I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I could distinguish between the smooth voice of Emmett and the drawling voices of the other boys there. Internally deliberating whether or not to go and join Emmett outside, I paced in front of the glass, my eyes never leaving the scene before me. But, just as I had decided to go outside, I felt the mobile phone in my pocket vibrate gently against my thigh. I dug it out, and quickly answered when I saw the caller ID.

'Alice?'

'Bella, what's going on?' Alice spoke at the superhuman speed the Cullen's usually reserved for each other, apparently without even realising that I couldn't understand her.

'What?'

'What's happening?' Alice spoke deliberately slower now, but with the same urgency in her voice.

'There are these guys outside; they're drunk and were going to come and trash your place, but Emmett's out there talking to them…'

'Don't go out there!' Her voice was so serious I stopped pacing.

'Why?'

'I had a vision. If you go out there, they'll get really angry and…you get hurt. Real bad. If you go out, you might not survive.' Suddenly, I was indecisive again. An audible sigh came through the phone as the vision Alice had obviously been seeing crystal-clear moments before became uncertain once more.

'What's happening now?' I pushed the curtain aside a little, peering through the glass at the scene unfolding on the Cullen's front lawn; I had to squint in order to see through the rain and increasing darkness.

'They're still talking…no wait; the boys are going back to their car. They're leaving.' I could see the group stumbling back to their black Impala, and piling back into the car. I turned away from the glass, thinking that I should really report them to Charlie when he got back for DUI.

I had just opened my mouth to say goodbye to Alice, when I heard her voice shriek through the speaker, accompanying a loud rev of the car's engine outside.

'BELLA, MOVE!!' I whipped around, startled at the sounds that seemingly were coming from every direction.

I stared out the window in horror: the sleek black car was speeding directly towards the house, headlights ablaze, directly towards me.

I froze. I couldn't move; I was literally a deer in headlights, except minus the antlers. Alice's screams pounding in my ear through the phone brought me back to my senses, except by then it was too late. I saw the door fly open, and saw the flash that was Emmett speeding towards me. But he was too late also.

With a massive crunch that would be heard from miles away, the car explosively collided with the front wall of the Cullen's home, sending shards of glass and chunks of wood flying. I flung my arms up to protect my head from the impending collision, but nothing could have prevented me from flying across the room when the brutal metal of the Impala's bonnet slammed into my fragile, human body. I was flung across the room, landing with a sickening crunch, sprawled across the wooden floorboards beside the staircase. Even for me and all my experiences, this was a new level of pain. It even trumped when James bit me in Phoenix, and that's saying something. But, fortunately for me, my body decided that it was too much to handle, and I gratefully slipped into unconsciousness.

'Bella? BELLA?' I screamed through the phone, feeling such huge amounts of concern for both Bella and Emmett I felt as though I would pass out, if that were even possible for a vampire. Then, quite suddenly, the sound I had been dreading echoed through the phone's speakers. I closed my eyes, a vision flashing across my mind in sync with the sounds coming through the speaker. A black car, filled with boys I vaguely recognised from school, was speeding towards our home. It smashed through the wall, pummelling it beyond recognition. This did not concern me, but a moment later the images before me caused me to cry out in anguish.

The car skidded at full speed through the wall, colliding with Bella, sending her hurtling across the room. She landed heavily on the unforgiving floorboards, sliding across the polished surface and ramming into the side of the staircase. Through the phone, I heard an incoherent mumble, before a resounding crash, followed by the steady beep of the dial tone. The phone had died, along with the vision that I had just seen.

I moaned and fell to my knees. How could I have let this happen? I was supposed to be able to see these things; I was supposed to be able to prevent disasters like this from happening. I rolled into a ball, clutching my head in my hands, by body shuddering in the bizarre adaptation that vampires made of crying. Suddenly, I could hear pounding footsteps running through the trees around me, and felt the person slide to the ground beside me. The distinguished scent of Edward washed over me as he pulled me into a tight embrace. He was murmuring comforts in my ear but I could tell that, having connected the dots that I had seen a vision, he wanted to know what happened. Not being able to bring myself to relay the events verbally, I replayed the vision in my mind, showing it to Edward accompanied with the sounds I had heard over the phone.

He watched the car with mild alarm as he recognised the house, and I could tell that he did not realise who was inside. Grief wracked my body, and I curled tighter into Edward's arms. I somehow managed to keep my thoughts going, but I knew I would not be able to continue much longer. My memory continued flowing, and I let out an audible moan when the vision revealed that Bella was inside. I felt Edward freeze, his arms around me still, but I felt as though I was enclosed in a statue rather than my brother's embrace. Emotion took over once more, and the memory came to a stuttering halt. I was breathing deeply, close to hyperventilation. Not that it made a difference as a vampire, but I still couldn't control my breath. Edward began murmuring again, but it was no longer a comforting whisper. He was muttering to himself; chanting a mantra in a desperate attempt to console his mind.

'No…not Bella…No…not my Bella…'

Painfully, I regained control of my mind, and gathered enough strength to finish the vision. Edward didn't move, as the car skidded through the hallway, but he still murmured his chant under his breath. His words came to a sudden halt when he saw the car collide with Bella's delicate body, and I felt him jolt in my arms when he saw the bonnet smash into Bella, doubtlessly breaking bones and bruising vital organs. He jolted again, apparently unconscious of his movement, when she collided with the floor.

The vision came to an unforgiving stop, providing no answers about the fate of any one in the house. But, despite there being at least six people and one vampire in the house, there was only one that I was grieving for; one person's fate that I was desperate to know. We sat, still and silent, for a long moment. Nothing moved, nothing breathed. No wind blew, no sun shone, no animal was moving. The silence was complete and unbroken, the only thing that I could hear were my own bereaved thoughts echoing around my head. The silence was suddenly broken by the sound of quickly approaching footsteps, breaking both Edward and me out of out respective reveries. As soon as he heard the footsteps, Edward jumped to his feet, sprinting away through the trees.

'Edward! Come back! EDWARD!' I called as loud as I could, although I knew it was in vain. A short vision that lasted mere seconds showed Edward approaching the ruined house, sprinting past Emmett, who was sitting on the stairs leading to the front door, his head in his hands, blood smudged and splattered on his plain, white t-shirt.

Closing my mind to the images before they became any more gruesome, I looked up when the approaching footsteps reached the clearing I was sitting in. Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie and Jasper were just coming through the trees into sight, concern etched across their marble faces. Esme hastened to my side when she saw me, helping me to my feet, wrapping a consoling arm around me.

'Alice, honey, what's the matter?' The others approached me too, Carlisle and Rosalie standing at a respectful distance, but Jasper coming right up beside me. He looked into my eyes, reading the grief and pain I was sure was shining out of my topaz eyes like beacons. Reading me like a book, Jasper took my hand.

'Alice, what did you see?' I took a shuddering breath, gathering myself as much as I could, before looking right into Jasper's concerned eyes.

'Bella's dead.'
