My first Phantom of the Opera fic - mostly because until a few days ago I didn't know that people actually wrote PotO fanfics. But I always felt that the story could not possibly be over . . .
He sat with his back to the approaching opera performers. His disfigured face no longer covered by the usual mask, he sang softly to the music box he held in his hands.
"Masquerade, every face a different shade, masquerade. Look around, there's another mask behind you. Masquerade, paper faces on display . . . masquerade. . . ." The first to arrive on the scene caught the echo of his final words as they rushed into his now empty dwelling, finding only the mask that he had left behind. "Hide your face so the world will never find you . . ."
The girl's head bounced lightly up and down in time with the music as her fingers drummed on the desk. Her green eyes stared unfocused at a blank word document on her computer screen. She had been "working" on the paper for her theater history class for several hours without success. When she noticed that her roommate had come into the room, she removed her headphones.
"Are you still listening to that?" Her friend and roommate unplugged the headphones from the computer and shook her head as the theme for "The Phantom of the Opera" filled the room and those adjacent. Krissy smiled dreamily in response.
"I just love this music . . ."
"Maybe once in a while you should lay off the music and actually get some work done so that you pass your classes?"
"I know I have to study and stuff, but I can listen to music and do that too,"
"Sure," her friend replied as she regarded the computer screen that revealed the opposite to be true. "Just like you did this afternoon." She commented in disgust. "I don't know how you plan to pass your classes this semester if you never study or do your assignments." Krissy sighed.
"Oh, Jen, there are things so much more important than school!"
"Like what, music?" The other girl frowned in reply.
"You just don't get it."
"You're right, I don't. But I did get your birthday present . . ." Jen teased.
"You did?" Krissy jumped up in excitement. "What is it? Are you going to tell me, or do I have to wait?"
"I'll tell you . . . . later,"
"Aww, Jen, that's no fun."
"Just kidding – I just happen to have four tickets to "The Phantom of the Opera" in Toronto in two weeks."
"No way! Are you serious! Jen, you are my best friend in the entire world! Now I have to figure out what I'm going to wear!" Jen sighed. Maybe the present wasn't such a good idea after all, she thought ruefully.
Well, that's it. Y'all know the drill, review and get updates sooner, don't review, and the Phantom disappears into oblivion . . . :sigh: And that probably won't make him too happy . . . and the Phantom not happy is most certainly not a good thing . . . Okay, I' m done now, I promise.
