Knock! Knock! Two sharp raps sounded on the door. "I'll get it" Darrel Curtis called out. Behind the door stood two police officers with sad solemn looks on there faces. "Uh, can I help you gentleman?" Darry felt his throat close just a little bit. "Is this the home of Darrel Curtis and Mary Curtis?" One officer asked. "Yes, why?" Darry already knew the answer but he needed to hear the cop say it. "I'm Terribly sorry, but there's been an accident. Neither of them made it." The cop actually sounded apologetic when he said it. "Thank you officers." Darry dismissed them, and closed the door.

"Who was that?" The small voice of the youngest Curtis rang out. "The cops. Mom and dad, they died." Darry whispered. Ponyboy and Sodapop stared at him in shock. The other greasers who had just been laughing and playing around seconds before dropped what they were holding in surprise. Dallas Winston dropped an empty bottle, Steve Randle dropped the chair he was bringing in from the kitchen, Two-Bit Matthews dropped the remote, and Johnny Cade dropped his cigarette. "What?" All the boys cried out in unison. The Curtis parents had been like second parents to all of them. Ponyboy had tears streaming down his face. "Your lying. You have to be." He whispered looking up hopefully at his oldest brother. "I wish I was Pony. I wish I was." He gathered his little brother in his arms and held onto him tightly. Sobs racked his tiny body.

Three days later, the gang led the funeral procession. The youngest Curtis trailing behind, as if waiting to see them would bring them back to life. When they sat down in the hard plastic chairs in the graveyard, each boy got up to say something about the Curtis parents. After the caskets had been lowered into the earth, Ponyboy got up, and started to walk away. "Ponyboy wait!" Darry called out. "Look I know your sad, but they're in a better place now. Now they don't have to worry about the war between the south side and the north side." He said wisely. "Darry it's the night of goodbyes." Ponyboy muttered. "Why's that?" Darry was getting confused. "We not only had to say goodbye to our parents, but also a piece of us that we'll never get back." He whispered. Darry pulled him into a hug. "We may not get that piece back, but we'll get new pieces Pony." Darry whispered into his little brothers hair. Ponyboy looked up at him with hopeful eyes. "I mean it kid." Darry said hugging his brother tighter.
