Chapter One:

"Can I get you anything else ma'am?"

Nineteen-year-old Jessi Montgomery was exhausted, but she still gave the older woman a kind smile as she refilled her coffee cup.

"No thanks," the graying brunette replied before turning her attention back to her magazine.

With an internal sigh of relief, Jessi escaped gratefully into the bathroom for a short break. It wasn't very busy at the moment, but it was nearly one o'clock in the morning and Jessi had been working since nine AM the day before.

"I need to stop filling in for people," she groaned, rubbing the tips of her fingers against her throbbing temples. But five minutes later it was time to get back to work, so she pulled her shoulder-length, midnight black hair into a sloppy bun at the base of her slender neck and headed back into the main room of the Last Chance Coffee Bar.

"Hey Jess, that guy is so totally checking you out," seventeen-year-old Emma Byers giggled as Jessi joined her beside the cash register on another one of her breaks. It was now about four o' clock.

"No he's not," Jessi replied, shooting a quick glance over her shoulder at the man sitting in one of the corner booths. He had come in about ten minutes ago and done nothing but stare out the dark window into the coming morning, as if lost in thought. But as the waitress cast her forest-green gaze his way, she was unexpectedly met with the sight of his own black eyes staring right back at her. With a small gasp she snapped her head back around, her tanned skin flushing.

"I told you he was checking you out," the redhead snickered under her breath, turning back to her register with a smirk.

"Oh shuttup Emma," the older girl retorted just as quietly, gently shoving her arm.

"Go talk to him!" the younger insisted, pushing her in his direction.

"About what exactly?" Jessi asked sarcastically, raising her brow incredulously.

"You're a waitress aren't you?" Emma retorted. "Go ask him if he wants anything!"

"Okay, okay fine!" with a huff the raven-haired girl grabbed her little black notebook out of her apron and took a deep breath before heading over to him.
