Sherlock turned his head away from the banging on the front door of 221B and tried to block out John's voice.
"For God's sake Sherlock, open this goddam door, we're really going to be late" he said, sounding agitated. Sherlock continued to ignore him, he didn't want to go, why did he have to go, it would be boring at the very least. Mind numbing probably.
"Right I'm going to get Mrs Hudson's key" John said firmly before his footsteps vanished down the stairs.
Sherlock sat up and drew his knees up to his chest, casting his eye over the brand new top hat and tails that were hanging on his bedroom door. He knew John would be disappointed when he saw Sherlock wasn't ready but then again John seemed to spend his life being disappointed in Sherlock.
He heard the key click in the lock and the door swung open. John stormed in, already dressed in his own tail coat, looking livid.
"Why aren't you dressed?" John asked incredulously. "I'm getting married Sherlock and you've not even bothered to get dressed"
"I'm not going John" said Sherlock sharply, "I am not going to sit in a church and be bored to death while you marry some woman who's all wrong for you."
John rolled his eyes. "Not this again." He said, pushing his hair back off his forehead. "I love Mary, you know I do and as my best man, I'd kind of like you to be there"
Sherlock stood up and walked over to John until there was a foot between them. John took a hasty step backwards looking extremely nervous.
"I have become far too accustomed to your company here John. When you moved out, I didn't like it. It was like you'd abandoned me. And now you are abandoning me permanently for some woman who has the itellenct of a small rodent." Sherlock said, fixing John with a cold glare. "I don't want you to leave. I'll um..miss you"
John's expression softened. "This isn't about Mary is it? It's about me leaving you on your own. Well I promise that will not happen, ok? I have no intention of letting that happen just because I'm not living here any more. Can you please get ready and come to the wedding? I really need my best man" he said, his voice pleading.
Sherlock shook his head.
"I can't John, I'm sorry. I hate to let you down but I can't face it" he said, propelling John towards the door with one hand.
"Have a nice life John…" Sherlock whispered, stooping to kiss John's cheek."
Before John even had time to react, Sherlock pushed him out of the door and slammed it shut behind him.
John stood at the altar, feeling so alone, his best man was missing and he was about to take his vows without Sherlock being there. He needed his best friend, he felt a tear leak out of his eye as he listened to the vicar droning on. Mary looked truly beautiful stood next to him, it made his heart swell with pride and also sink that Sherlock wasn't here to see this.
"Bit soon to be crying isn't it?" said a voice in his ear. John whipped round. Sherlock had crept into the church and was stood next to him, positively beaming, which made John gasp and a huge smile broke across his face.
"Thank you" he whispered to Sherlock, squeezing his hand. "Just thank you so much"
"Don't mention it" Sherlock whispered back. "Now, go get married"
