Severus looked at Lily siting underneath the tree near the lake. He had always admired her.
No matter what he might have told her or what he kept reminding himself, there was just something about her that made him ache.

Her smile kept haunting him even in his dreams.
To him she seemed perfect. She was smart, beautiful and had the sense of humor he lacked.
When she entered a room it seemed like the sun was shining just a bit brighter than before.
There was no one that could hate her, no one who didn't want to be around her. She was the closest to perfection.

He suspected that he loved her, but he didn't want to make his feelings known since he knew he wasn't meant for her.
He would probably end up hurting her in some way or another. It was in his nature to be dark and while Lily was light it was impossible for them to be together.
He just hoped that she would understand. It just couldn't be. He'd rather have her happy with someone else then her being miserable knowing it would have been his fault.

Lucius had guessed about his infatuation and reminded him that it was impossible for him to end up with someone like Lily.
He just wanted it to be different, but his path was already set out before him. He was bound to live a life within darkness.

He hoped Lily wouldn't hate him for his choice. If only...

He watched as Potter approached her. It was for the best this way.. He just hoped that he could watch her from afar and protect her in any way possible.

He turned around and made his way back to the castle not seeing Lily turn her head and watch him go with a sad smile.
