Song: Learn To Be Lonely From The Phantom Of The Opera

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gil Grissom sat at his table at the annual Sheriff's dinner. He watched the people that surrounded him at his table and others. He hated large social gatherings. Being in a social setting with so many people made him uncomfortable. But it was something he was more or less required to attend as Night Shift Supervisor and so he did. Most of the tables were filled with couples: husbands and wives, dating pairs, and significant others. Even Brass had scrounged up a date, not that Brass really had a problem in that department. He wasn't socially inept like Grissom seemed to be. Catherine was always trying to help him out with social situations, giving him pointers and showing him the way. Over the years he had come to depend on her for help with that but she always remained the one that was good with people and he still seemed to have his nose stuck in a microscope. Normally he didn't give it a lot of thought, but being surrounded by so many couples made him very lonely; something he usually didn't think about either.

Child of the wilderness
Born into emptiness
Learn to be lonely
Learn to find your way in darkness

He spied an older couple at the sheriff's table. It was obvious that they had been together for many years. There was an awareness between the two, even when their attention seemed elsewhere. They were a lucky couple, he decided. So many marriages end in divorce or they stay together out of habit. But these two were still in love. Another thought crossed Gil's mind; another one that didn't often intrude. 'I'll die alone." He wasn't sure how he felt about that. There was a sadness in the thought but then, he'd lived his entire life alone, why should he expect to end it with someone?

Who will be there for you
Comfort and care for you
Learn to be lonely
Learn to be your one companion

There had been women in his life but none seemd to stick with him very long. He understood that he was the problem, not them. Most had moved on to long term relationships with others. When he was younger, much younger, he had hoped to find a special someone that he could call his. But he had given up on that long ago. He really hadn't even done much in the way of dating in recent years; it just seemed pointless.

Never dreamed out in the world
There are arms to hold you
You've always known your heart was on its own

He had grown up in a quiet house, spending most of his time with his thoughts as his only companion; his thoughts and the various bugs he aquired on his treks through the woods near his house. As he had gotten older, his treks had broadened, reaching as far as a tropical rainforest. But his habit of keeping to himself had remained. He reached into the wilderness but never into the sea of people that surrounded him.

So laugh in your loneliness
Child of the wilderness
Learn to Be lonely
Learn how to love life that is lived alone

Generally he liked his life; the quite and solitude. But occassionally he still wished...wondered what it would be like to have someone special...someone who thought he was special.

Learn to be lonely
Life can be lived life can be loved alone

Tonight was one of those occassions.
