Soul Mates

"I don't believe in soul mates," Abby uttered during their third offical date. It was not the third time they'd had seen each other but it was the third time they had been outside together. Most of the time they had spent time in Abby's apartment.

"What?" McGee asked. He was completely blindsided by what she had said.

He had always believed in soul mates. He had seen how his Grandmother and Grandfather acted around each other he had always wanted that for himself. He believed in the picket fence ideal and the typical life script. He had never really been interested in anything alternative to that.

But Abby was the definition of alternative. She understood a whole world that he had never even heard about. He had been to a party of Abby's and been surrounded by people who would have tagged him boring and conventional boring if he had opened his mouth without Abby's prompting.

"I just never understood the whole soul mates thing," Abby blabbered, "I mean humans are not even supposed to be monogamous."

Abby continued to make valid points backing up her arguments but McGee was not listening. He thought about it. He could not imagine a life without a picket fence. But at that point in time he could not let go of Abby. He liked her. He was close to loving her. She was unlike anyone he had ever met.

"I just can't believe in it," Abby continued. "What do you think? Have you been listening?"

"Yeah," McGee replied, "You don't believe in soul mates,"

"Do you?" Abby asked.

"I'm not sure," McGee lied.

They would spend a lifetime trying to convince each other to believe or not believe in soul mates but in the end they would meet somewhere in the middle.
