Warnings: Spoilers for Season 6. Sam's return may not be the miracle everyone hoped for. Sam's POV.
Strangely, the first thing he notices is warmth.
Lucifer hadn't been lying when he'd said Hell was cold. The Devil was ice, had filled Sam's veins with a chill that would have put the Arctic to shame.
So when he opens his eyes - his own eyes, what a miracle - finds he's lying in Stull Cemetery, nostrils filled with rich earth scents, all he can think about is the joy that feeling the heat of the sun bathing his skin brings.
Then his heart stumbles, remembering.
And there isn't enough antifreeze on God's green earth to thaw his soul.
