31. Flowers
Wally looked behind him to make sure that no one he knew was around, and pushed open the door to the shop. If anyone saw him in here, it would totally ruin his reputation. Of course, if anyone mentioned anything about him being in here, he would beat them up. That might help.
As the door swung shut behind him and the bell chimed, Wally was overwhelmed by the too-sweet scent of flowers and the bright colors that lined every wall. This was ridiculous. What on earth was he doing in here anyway? He turned to leave, but then he remembered the smile on Kuki's face when he had talked to her, and what his mom had said about how every girl liked flowers. Wally took a deep breath – almost choking on the flower fumes – stuck out his chest, and stepped further into the shop. He could do this.
Wally looked at the rows of plants along all the shelves and found himself completely at a loss. His mom had said that girls liked flowers, but which ones? There were so many varieties; it gave him a headache.
Maybe she would like ones that were colorful. She had a pretty colorful personality; maybe he should get some of those bright yellow or orange ones. He had heard that roses were nice, but he thought maybe they were too serious. He didn't have much practice with this.
Eventually Wally had to face it: he knew absolutely nothing about flowers, girls, or dating. He would have to ask the saleslady for help. He gathered all of his courage, and stepped up to the lady at the counter. "Um, hey, can you help me?"
She was talking to another customer and didn't hear him, so he tried again. "Hey, lady, I said I need some help!"
The other woman frowned at him and left the store, and the clerk turned to him with a scowl. "That was very rude!"
"Well, I need some help. I want to get my – um - my girlfriend," he muttered, "some flowers, but I don't know what kind to get."
"What kind of budget are we talking about?" she asked.
"Budget?"
"Money," she said impatiently. "How much money do you have?"
"Oh. Right." Wally dug into his pocket and pulled out six quarters, two crumpled dollar bills, several pennies, and a bubble gum wrapper. "Two dollars, and about eleventy cents."
The clerk laughed and turned away dismissively. "Maybe you should look in the dumpster out back!"
He stomped out with his hands in his pockets, grumbling about "cruddy cashiers" and "dumb flower shops." He knew this was a bad idea.
But now what was he going to do for Kuki? He couldn't just show up without anything at all; his mom had been very clear about that.
Then he remembered the other thing she had said that girls loved to get on a date. Chocolate! Of course. It was perfect. Now, how much chocolate could he get with eleventy cents?
----
Several minutes later he walked out of the grocery store carrying a huge bag of M&Ms, and an equally large bag of Reese's peanut butter cups. She was going to love this.
----
Several minutes after that, Wally arrived at Kuki's door with 15 M&Ms and two Reese's peanut butter cups. He was sure that she would still like it. Besides, she could only have so much sugar before she really started bouncing off the walls. She would like it. Of course she would. Why wouldn't she?
He didn't really have to worry. As soon as Kuki opened the door, she squealed, "Wally, you're here!"
Wally stood, speechless, still holding out the slightly melted chocolates. She. Looked. Amazing. He knew it had been a good idea not to get flowers. None of them could ever be as pretty as she was.
