Pairing: Remus/Sirius
Summary: For a split second, Remus could see his future.
Completed: July 19, 2007
Notes: After a very long hiatus from the fandom (about a year!), the movie brought me back. Pulled me back, more like it.
For a split second, Remus could see his future. It had afternoon sunshine and family meals. Holidays and traditions. Maybe even quiet nights. Together. Most of all it had them together.
It was so very close.
As close as Sirius at his shoulder; the flesh and blood breathing beside him. The voice in his ear, tickling his cheek. As close as Harry and Sirius' welcoming embrace, a glow of affection and admiration lighting the boy's face. Lighting Sirius'. Lighting the whole darkened house. Breathing new life into the old tomb.
So very close.
He heard it, believed it. In the dry laugh from Sirius, the resolve in his crackling voice. He swore, promised, and vowed. A whisper of after. Plans for later. Raising Harry. Building a home, a family. Living. After. Later. Soon. Most of all, it was soon.
So close.
He could almost touch it now, the future. It was just at the ends of his outstretched fingers. Remus brushed against it like the casual touches while passing in the hall. The way their hands grazed while passing plates. The solid frame under his hand as he latched on, held on. Made sure it was solid and true and real.
Close.
The space was gone. They were close now. He could smell the firewhiskey on Sirius' breath. He could smell Sirius. A sent his body had rejected years and years ago, but now it remembered. As fresh as the first time, tied to long surpressed memories and hopes. It made his head swim. He could drown in it.
Closer.
He could taste it on Sirius' lips: their future. A quick kiss for luck – like the old days – before apparating off to the Ministry to save Harry. To save everything. To start everything over again. The fast press of lips against lips confirmed it all, set it in stone. Soon. Always.
Too close.
In a sickly flash of light, it was gone. Taken. Sucked away and drained from him. Stolen. Everything he had been so close to, everything he had felt and seen and been with was gone.
Everything was quiet, still – gone.
In a split second, Remus saw his future slip away.
End.
