It was the middle of winter and the night was clear and cold. The tree had long since shed its leaves and the wind made no noise as it blew through the branches. Even had there still been leaves to rustle, the shadow that appeared on the branch a moment later would have made no more noise than the wind.

Hiei peered into the dark window of Kurama's house with a puzzled frown. He'd used the almost unnaturally convenient tree to enter Kurama's room before (and suspected Kurama might have grown it just for him), but he had never seen the house so dark or silent; even in the dead of night there was usually a little light on as some mechanism in the house hummed busily away. Tonight the entire house was dark and silent and Hiei could not see any sign of the resident kitsune, just a large mound where the bed was supposed to be.

Hurry up fox. Am I going to have to sit here all night?

The mound in the center of the room trembled a little and revealed itself to be Kurama, lying curled up on his bed and covered with what seemed to be every blanket in the house. Hiei watched in puzzlement as the fox sat up, wrapped himself in a blanket and shuffled over to window. He was even more startled when Kurama practically slammed the window shut as soon as he was inside, then jumped back into bed, visibly shivering, and proceeded to bury himself in the blankets again.

"Fox? Are you alright?"

Kurama nodded his head. "Cold," he said. Or at least that's what it sounded like under the chattering of his teeth.

"Power went out, no heater. All warming plants would set the bed on fire. I'm fine, just cold."

Hiei blinked. He hadn't even noticed the cold; he'd just adjusted his temperature automatically until he was comfortable. He looked at Kurama and smirked. The kitsune was glaring at him, knowing that Hiei hadn't even noticed the cold. However the glare was somewhat subverted by his inability to stop shivering.

Kurama's annoyance turned into puzzlement when Hiei removed his cloak and katana and walked over to the bed. His eyes widened even further in surprise when Hiei proceeded to burrow his way into Kurama's cocoon of blankets. Hiei was never cold: Kurama knew this. So what was he doing?

"Hiei?"

Hiei ignored the fox and continued working his determinedly inward. When he reached the center he carefully unwrapped Kurama's last blanket and curled up around the kitsune, raising his ki a little higher. Kurama, who had stiffened a bit in surprise, relaxed completely and snuggled closer to Hiei's warmth. Hiei smiled faintly as he felt the fox gradually stop shivering, then he shivered a little himself as Kurama gently nuzzled his neck.

"Thank you, Hiei." Hiei snorted.

"Hn. Stupid fox. Go to sleep."

Kurama snuggled closer and obeyed. Hiei listened to his fox's slow and even breathing and decided that he should permanently disable the heater.
