I'm not JKR

Sirius slumped in a chair by the fire. Why? Why did his parents do the things they did? Why did they have to lead Regulus down their path? The path of darkness and greed, curses and fear. He stared into the dying flames, a tear tracing its way down his cheek.

"Dammit, Reg. Why can't you just see what I see?" he muttered.

"What do you see?" Sirius whipped his head up at the voice.

"Lily!" what are you doing here?" he asked.

"I came down to get my book, but saw you here, talking to yourself. What's wrong?" the redhead asked softly.

"It's Regulus, the prat. He was caught practicing dark curses after curfew. Why can't he just see that it would be better to fight for what's right? Doesn't he see that he's just harming himself? I just can't stop myself from loving him. I want to be able to not care, but he makes that impossible," Sirius cried, running a hand through his hair in frustration. Lily stared at him sympathetically, the glowing embers reflected in her eyes. She placed her hand on his shoulder.

"Oh, Sirius. I wish I could say something, but I know that 'I'm sorry' is a really pathetic phrase. And I know that my own experiences with Tuney can never compare," she said.

"Don't say that, they're just as important," Sirius insisted.

"Yes, but she isn't what we're talking about right now," Lily said.

"Yeah, I guess"

"Let it out," Lily advised. Sirius glowered at the fire for a while. Eventually, Lily prodded him in the shoulder.

"Hey," she whispered. "Are you just going to sit there not talking or are you going to go to bed?" Sirius turned to toward her and she saw tear tracks on his cheeks.

"Just tell me it didn't mean anything."

"I can't."

"But why? Why can't anyone tell me that it didn't mean anything, that Regulus isn't really going down that path?" Sirius asked, finally letting his anguish out. Lily wrapped her arms around him.

"Only he knows, but nothings ever going to stop you from loving him," she comforted him. "He does eventually have to make a choice though."

"He's my little brother, Lily. I can't just not protect him!"

"I know that, come on," Lily tugged Sirius so that they were sitting back against the sofa. Sirius shifted into a more comfortable position.

"I don't suppose you'd let me go upstairs to sleep?" he joked. Lily laughed.

"Not a chance, Black," she smiled. And so, they sat there, hugging, Sirius appropriately comforted.
