Forever
A/N: Post "Doppelganger", pre "Reckoning". This is my first (published) Alias fic, so go easy on me ;) Alias is property of ABC/JJ Abrams. The lyrics are from the Sarah Brightman version of "Who Wants To Live Forever". I recommend downloading it and listening to it while you read.
Sydney watched the building explode, the force of the blast ripping the building apart, killing the CIA team inside. Her heart felt like it was being crushed by a giant hand. She couldn't breathe. She heard Dixon calling to her, but he sounded far away and the explosion was ringing in her ears.
There's no time for us,
There's no place for us,
What is this thing that builds our dreams,
Yet slips away from us.
Syd awoke, her heart pounding. She was sweating, but her skin was clammy to the touch. That was the third time she'd had that dream since she'd returned from Badenweiler. Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The rational explanation wasn't doing a thing for her. It was nothing compared to the guilt.
Who wants to live forever,
Who wants to live forever, .....?
She needed to get out, to get it out of her head - if that was possible. She needed to get out of it all together. There was only one person she could talk to.
There's no chance for us,
It's all decided for us,
This world has only one sweet moment
Set aside for us.
Vaughn spotted her as soon as he arrived. She was leaning over the railing, staring into the briny-deep. Her shoulders were trembling. He closed his eyes for a second, steeling himself against the hurt, the hurt he knew she was feeling, the hurt it was causing him. He knew the double-agent thing was hanging on her. He took a step forward, then another and soon he was at her side.
She didn't look up, so he reached out and put his hand over hers. She looked over at their hands, like she needed to see it to know it was true because her sense of touch was numbed. Vaughn felt his heart shiver. She looked up at him, tears streaked down her face.
"I killed them," she breathed. "I killed them."
"No, no, you didn't know," he whispered. "You had no way of knowing Dixon had a second device."
"I should have known. He's my partner." She was crying harder, and shivering. Vaughn wrapped his arms around her. "It's all me," she continued. "I killed them, just like I killed Danny. I just - I can't do this anymore. It's costing way too much. I want out."
Who wants to live forever,
Who wants to live forever, .....?
"Sydney, listen to me." She raised her head from where it had been buried in his chest. His heart clenched at the look in her tear-filled eyes. Gently, experimentally, he reached out and wiped the tears from one cheek with his fingertips. She leaned into his touch. He held his breath. He felt the slightest brush of her lower lip against his thumb.
Now touch my tears with your lips,
Touch my world with your fingertips,
And we can have forever,
And we can love forever,
Forever is our today.
She looked up at him, at the wonder in his eyes that that one simple action of hers had produced. She allowed a small smile to tug at the corners of her mouth. Just being with him could make her feel better. It wouldn't bring back all those men at Badenweiler, and it couldn't make all the guilt go away, but it certainly helped to make it worth it all.
Who wants to live forever,
Who wants to live forever, .....?
Who waits forever anyway?
