PROLOGUE
Denmark knows that when he dies, no one will remember him. They won't remember the face of the nation. They won't remember the way he smiled with his people or bled for his people. No one will remember him. They'll remember the nation. They'll remember the Kingdom of Denmark. But not Mathias. Never Mathias.
As he lay in the trenches, numb and drenched to the bone in frozen water, that was what was on his mind. They finally invaded Copenhagen. They're bombing her to the ground and he can feel it in his chest- In his heart. His people are dying, his people are sobbing as families get torn apart. But he can't do anything. He can't even move to make sure the solider next to him is alive.
The sound of a bomb exploding close to the trench shocks him out of his thoughts. He knows this will be the last time people will ever get to see Copenhagen standing before everything goes black. It's dark. It's cold. And he's scared. For the first time in hundreds of years, Mathias cries out for Lukas.
