Sunlight drifted lazily through the window, making Gilbert's white hair look even lighter. He sat before Roderich's piano, grumbling at the sheet music for 'Happy Birthday to You'.
Grumbling did not help, however, so he thought back, back, to when Old Fritz had first taught him how to play the violin.
"Fine." He grumbled, tossing the papers away when he found he couldn't do it quite right. Gilbert took a deep breath, raised his head and pressed a few keys.
The effect was not the one he wanted. Instead of a warm, flowing sound like 'do re mi', it was a scramble or 'do ti so fa do ti', and Gilbert was not happy. Hours passed, whilst the Prussian hurried to find a tune to fit the words he'd thought of the day before.
It was 12:34 by the time Gilbert had found his tune, and just in time. Roderich, who'd gone for a trip to Elizaveta's house a few hours earlier, (which explained his absence, Gilbert decided) opened the door and stared down at Gilbert as he bent over to pick up the scattered papers.
"What are you doing?" Roderich asked quietly, eyebrows raised. Gilbert flashed the other a grin. "Oh, being awesome and picking up stuff before you kill me, of course. I gotta run, see you later, okay?" He stood, taking the papers with him and actually tripping a bow as he passed the Austrian.
Roderich took several backward glances at him, wondering what was up with the Prussian. Several hours passed, and it was about dinner time. Roderich had not seen a certain albino with a scary macho brother lately, and he was hoping that the Prussian hadn't gotten into trouble. Again.
He searched the house, but the only thing that rewarded his searches was a note with Gilbert's handwriting: In the garden, Four-Eyes~. The Austrian sighed, suddenly remembering what day it was.
This was probably another of Gilbert's birthday tricks, he supposed, but decided to be gracious about it and suck up whatever the Prussian had in store for him. There, in the garden under his favorite pavilion, was Gilbert, seated at the outdoor piano.
Oh my. What did he have planned this time? "What are you doing?" He asked for the second time that day. Gilbert just grinned and began playing. He played with one hand, and quite well for someone who hadn't played an instrument for a while.
"So, did you like it?" He asked, grinning up at Roderich once he was finished. "It was... nice..." The Austrian murmured, dropping into the seat beside Gilbert. "Hnh? What're ya doin'?" He asked, tilting his head. Roderich began to play. "Playing you something in return, dummy." He replied.
A pale hand caught Roderich's by the wrist, and he turned, startled, to face the albino. "I don't need that, babe, it ain't my birthday." The Austrian jerked his wrist away, turning several shades of red.
"Be quiet! I… I feel awkward about you playing something for me." He explained, but pulled the lid of the piano down over the keys. "Oh, but that's easy. I shall repay you." Gilbert murmured, slipping closer to the Austrian.
"What?" The Prussian just grinned, standing up and held a hand out. "Ah, you shall see." Roderich stood as well, confused.
Smack.
Five seconds later, Gilbert was running from an enraged Austrian with a smarting rear end.
Oh well. Gilbert thought as he ran; at least he's not chasing me for playing his piano.
