"Porcelain"
A Rukawa Kaede Character Sketch

He peered into the framed silver of the mirror, and straight into his own reflection.

He knew how he, himself, looked like.

He had seen his own face countless times before.

Yet, he stared at his reflection in awe.

-

Have you ever seen porcelain?

-

He lifted his sport-callused hand and held it against his cheek, slightly curious. With one soft caress, he ran his fingertips underneath his eye to the side of his face.

Just like wiping away a tear.

-

Porcelain- ashen, smooth, sleek, and cold.

-

Rukawa was now one of the best basketball players in the entire Japan.

He gazed deep into his indigo eyes.

The determination. The raw desire. The ultimate goal.

The obsession.

All gone in a single drop of tear.

-

Porcelain, when dropped, shatters.

-

The bead of wetness cascaded down his pale face, and halted in the crevice of his lips.

The saline taste unhurriedly contaminated his tongue and crept down his esophagus, settling, inevitably, in the pit of his stomach.

Kami-sama, how he felt empty now.

-

Porcelain, being as fragile as it is, surrenders to the stronger ground, and breaks into a thousand pieces as it encounters it.

-

He fisted his hand, his knuckles turning white from exertion.

With one quick swing, he connected his clenched fist to the now cracked mirror, his knuckles crying blood in protest.

He averted his vision to the mirror. Through the web of cracks and flaws, he contemplated his own reflection.

And he didn't recognize it.

-

It doesn't matter if it has shattered into a thousand pieces.

Porcelain is still porcelain.
