It was the night of the annual Jump City High School Homecoming Dance. I didn't have a date, but I was meeting a group of my friends there, so it wasn't all that bad.

"Karen, do I have to go? You know how much I hate dances," I said as Karen tied the laces of my dress.

"Rachelle, it'll be good for you. Besides, maybe you'll meet someone there," she said, smiling.

It was time to go. Karen and Kori brought the car around front as I stood in front of the mirror. I got into the back seat of her car, all-the-while thinking to myself, "you can do this. You can do this."

Karen pulled up to the school and whiped around into a parking space.

"Are you ready for the night of your life?" she asked as she entered the double doors.

"I'm ready to get this night over with," I mumbled as I followed her.

I took a deep breath and proceeded into the building. I paid for my ticket and proceeded onto the dance floor. I found a corner away from everyone and watched silently as my classmates danced the night away.

About half way through the dance, a group of sophomore boys swarmed around me, blocking me in with no way out.

"C'mon Rachelle, dance with us," said Leo, the leader. "I-I don't know how to dance," I said backing up as they pressed in on me.

"C'mon, we saw you before. What's different now?" he asked as he grinned.

"I told you. I can't dance at all," I told them. They gave up and walked away, only to stay in close proximity to me. I continued to watch, my classmates, but I also kept an eye on the seven boys that had cornered me earlier.

"Ok guys, we're going to slow things down a bit," said the DJ, as he put on a slow song. I watched as boy pulled their dates into a slow dance. I wasn't paying much attention, because before long, one of the sophomore boys, Devin, came up to me. "Would you care to dance?" he asked. I looked him straight in the eyes and said, "I'd love to."

As he and I danced, I happened to look over at Karen and, to my surprise, Richard. Karen and Kori was grinning happily, but Rich, however had his hands balled up into fists.

That was how I spent my evening. Watching my classmates and dancing with underclassmen, while Richard stood watching seething in jealousy.
