Fifty Shades of Alternate Universe

Chapter One

"Alright ladies… and Jose," Kate winked to the tan man, who raised his glass to her in response. "Here's to the most amazing night of our lives! No more exams… no more teachers… and no more school! Class of 2011, WVSU!"

A fit of cheers and laughter surrounded the table as everyone lifted their drink, the sound of clinking glass chiming harmoniously.

Ana smiled, though she had to admit she felt a bit uneasy. Jose had been staring at her all evening, and it made her feel uncomfortable. She knew Kate had said that in the hopes he would try something, but Ana only saw Jose as a friend. She could tell he was trying to get her alone to say something, and it made her frown. Why couldn't he leave a good thing be?

"Are you alright?" Kate asked, taking her elbow and leading her away from the group.

"Yeah, I guess. I just… I don't know. Jose is acting weird, and it's making me feel freaky." Ana shrugged her shoulders, sipping her drink cautiously. It didn't take her long to get tipsy, and by the way Kate was feeling, she could tell she had a long night ahead of her.

"Jose has been eyeing you for like four years, ever since we started college. Why don't you give him a chance?"

"Because, Kate, I don't like him like that. He's a friend," she murmured, trying not to look in his direction. "Besides, I was an English Major. I go for the dark, brooding type of man, the man who was is so sociably awkward and mad that he is convinced he can't love. Like Rochester."

"Ever the romantic, Anastasia Steele! However, men aren't like that anymore. Men are more interested in the physical aspect of the relationship. You know what I'm saying?" Kate wriggled her eyebrows, and Ana rolled her eyes in response.

"The guys you date might like that junk, but I haven't found someone I want to bump uglies with." Ana fake coughed, putting a hand on her head dramatically. "Perhaps I'll never fall in love!"

"You don't need to love a guy to sleep with him. You just got to think he's hot. Now, get your arse over here, Steele, and wriggle those hips!"

"Kate!" Ana exclaimed, just managing to put her drink down before she spilt it. It's not like she'd ruin any expensive clothing, she scoffed at herself. While her friend had dressed for the occasion in a short pink dress with black stilettos, Ana had a pair of faded jeans with converse and a fitting grey V-neck. She was your typical girl-next-door, and she definitely looked the part. Looking at her clothes compared to Kate's, she frowned.

She wondered just how their friendship was as good as it was. Kate was a total party girl, complete with blonde hair and perfect smile. Ana was a complete bookworm, topped off with brown hair and a nervous laugh. It had been Kate's wonderful personality and her kindness that had won Ana's friendship, and she couldn't help the smile as she remembered some of their funniest moments together.

"That's the spirit!" Kate interrupted her thoughts with a huge smile. "Now's the time to show the menfolk what you've got." Kate laughed, taking Ana's fingers and lacing them through hers, pulling her closer to her body. She smacked her left hip against Ana's right, pulling on her arms and rotating the dance.

"But Kate," Ana giggled, afraid to admit she was starting to have a good time. "I don't want to give anyone the wrong idea…"

"So? You should at least have some fun while you're here, and if you happen to strike someone's fancy… then at least they'll think you can have a good time."

Kate's smile was infectious, and while Ana couldn't really dance, the margaritas were helping to relax her. Giving in to the sway of the beat, Ana raised her arms and swung them in the air, turning and twisting her body in a funny dance.

She didn't quite realize just how tense she had been, and now with the pressure of school over, she could ease up for a little while. At least until she started seriously looking into getting a job. Maybe she'd just take a simple job before she tried to jump right into publishing. She had her options still.

She hadn't noticed that Jose had started dancing with her until she felt his hands on her hips. She turned quickly, pushing them off of her body.

"Where's Kate?" She asked immediately, wrapping her arms around her middle as she started to feel uneasy. She searched the crowd for the strawberry blonde, relaxing when she saw she was dancing with another guy. This one was blonde, too, and it looked like it was getting intense.

"Ana, can we talk?" Jose asked, much to Ana's nightmare. This was exactly what she had been afraid of.

"Jose, listen… I don't want a relationship or anything. We're just friends, right?" She asked, stepping back as he came closer to her.

"I need to tell you how I feel, while I have the courage." He started, completely ignoring her first comment.

"Jose, please." She bit her lip, hoping Kate would look up and see her distress. Unfortunately, her eyes were preoccupied as her date slipped his tongue down her throat. Kate…

"Dos Mios, Ana, I love it when you bite your lip."

Ana's eyes widened as he came towards her again, his hands wrapping around her waist. His lips came down to meet hers, but they never touched as he was shoved away from her. Ana stared in bewilderment as she looked to the person who saved her from Jose's unwanted affections.

"Sir, I believe you are making the lady uncomfortable. Please leave." His voice was dark, the threat that he wasn't afraid to physically remove him behind his civility.

Jose looked back to Ana, who was still biting her lip as she looked away from him and towards the ground, tears had started welling in her eyes. Throwing his hands up in frustration, he turned on his heel and walked away, swearing quickly in Spanish. Her rescuer turned carefully as not to upset her, looking her over in a quick assessment.

"Miss, are you alright?" He asked, putting his hands in his jean pockets as he straightened his posture. Ana nodded her head slowly, raising her eyes to meet his.

"Yes, thank you. He didn't mean any harm… he just wanted to talk." Why was she defending him? He hadn't done her any harm, but he was making her uncomfortable, and he knew it. Whoever this man was, it was obvious that he didn't like she was protecting Jose, either.

"Whatever the case may be, it is impolite to throw oneself at another who is clearly uninterested. It was disgusting to witness." His voice was even as he spoke, so it was hard for Ana to tell if he was really mad or if he was just being a good citizen. She sighed, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear.

"In any case…" she muttered, looking down to his shoes before looking to his sweater. "I'm Ana," she said, offering her hand to him. He looked at it, but did not move to touch it. She made a sour face, her eyes rolling as she cocked her hip in annoyance. "My hand is pretty clean, sir. I washed it and everything."

Something she must have said caught his attention, if it weren't obvious since his eyes seem to sparkle as if she had said something utterly fascinating, and he made to shake her hand quickly.

"Christian," he breathed, his tone huskier that it had been earlier. Her eyebrow rose as she looked him over curiously, her inner goddess screaming her approval. Copper colored messy hair, piercing grey eyes, and a clean shaven chin that was shaped by the gods. Jesus, This man was sex on legs.

"I guess I'll see you around then." Ana said softly, trying to unlock her eyes from his. She turned away from him, feeling her blood rush from the shock she felt as their skin touched.

"Goodbye, Ana." She heard his voice like smooth velvet, her body shivering as she wrapped her arms around her small frame. She couldn't look back. If she did, there would be consequences. She didn't need any baggage left in Portland.

With that, she made to find her drunken friend and try not to fantasize about her hands fisted in coppered hair.

Authors Note:/ Greetings, all! This is my first fanfiction outside of my usual pairing of Sesshomaru and Kagome from Inuyasha, and so I'm pretty excited to share this. I haven't posted anything on here in a long while, and am unable to access my usual account.
