Just a little idea I've had for a while, when I first saw the character Addison I soooo thought she would make a great lesbian, and then I found fanfiction, and it got my creative juices going (oot oot!) and I thought about Callie, but then I figured we could give poor old Hahn a chance and thus I paired her with Arizona. So anyways I hope you like it!
Disclaimer: I own nothing, though I wish I did, cos Grey's is just awesome.
The shrill ring of the alarm clock pierced it's way into Addison Montgomery's dulled sleep. She opened her reluctant eyelids, waiting for the blurriness of sleep to fully leave her eyes and her brain to properly switch on and reach full alertness. She sighed heavily at the prospect of another day. Another day of the same crap, another day of watching her husband pine after another woman, another day of being ignored. Remaining stationary, she heard both Derek and the mattress groan as he rolled over to switch it off. Without a word, he heaved himself out of bed and she listened to the rustle of clothing and the jangle of keys for a few minutes, quietly waiting, but painfully non expectant.
As predicted, there was a moment of silence, before the trailer door opened and she was hit with the sounds of joyful birds and other country-related noise she despised.
"See you at the hospital." He called before the door was slammed and she was left alone again. She sighed. Another day in paradise.
Addison kept her head down as she walked into Seattle Grace Mercy West hospital, keen to avoid the looks of pity she knew would be directed her way from sympathetic nurses or concerned colleagues, keen to avoid overly enthusiastic interns who would corner her and proceed to chatter non stop - giving her a blow by blow account of the most basic of surgeries they'd scrubbed in for, or assisted with. But most of all, she was desperately keen to avoid Meredith Grey. Because that was just plain awkward.
"Hey!" A hand landed on her shoulder, she turned and was met by an ear splitting grin plastered on the face of her best friend.
"Callie." she smiled warmly and her mood brightened instantly. She loved Callie, adored her, she was so warm and genuine, had a heart of gold and her brilliant sense of humour never failed to lift Addison's spirits – something she was definitely in need of recently.
"I brought you coffee!" She handed Addison the drink. "Well I say I brought it – I actually had Kepner make it cos I was kinda busy and she was under my feet but I wanted the thought to be there still, so if it tastes like crap I'll definitely buy you one from the cafeteria, though knowing April it's probably heaven in a cup with little sprinkles and whipped cream and all that pretty stuff, but whatever. Try it, spit it out, your choice." She nodded seriously.
Addison smiled at her friends happy rambling, it was an opposite scale of the spectrum to the stony silence or awkward one liners she experienced at home. A scale she welcomed gladly.
"It's great." She said after a cautious sip. "Thank you. Are you up to much today?"
"I've got a few things but nothing mind blowing. A hip replacement here, an amputation there, nothing special. Erica's buying me lunch though, so it's not all dull and tedious. You?"
Addison took a large gulp of the cappuccino before she replied. She desperately needed caffeine.
"I dunno, Webber said something about a new peds attending he wants me to meet as she'll be taking on a few neonatal cases with me as well apparantly." The slight change in her tone did not go unnoticed to Callie.
"You know he doesn't mean it as an insult Addie, he's just wor-"
"-Worried about me? Yeah I got it." She sighed.
Callie looked at her, before pulling her into an embrace.
"Alright Montgomery, hug it out. Thats it, feel the tension leave your body." she mocked, giving Addison a tight squeeze. The redhead smiled, returning the gesture, before spotting Cardiothoracic surgeon Erica Hahn over Callie's shoulder.
"Hey, your tougher half is here"
Callie let her go before slapping her playfully. "Ah she's a real softie on the inside you know!" She grinned and turned away to greet her girlfriend. "Oh and good luck with the peds gal!" she threw over her shoulder quickly. "See you at lunch?"
"Definitely."
Smiling, Addison turned away and continued towards the peds wing.
"Ah! Doctor Shepherd!" Called a warm voice.
"Montgomery." Addison corrected the chief as he strode towards her. Although they were back together, Derek had insisted she get rid of his name, claiming she didn't deserve it anymore.
"Oh right of course, excuse me. Doctor Montgomery, this is Doctor Arizona Robbins, our new head of pediatrics." He gestured to the woman who had appeared to literally float across the floor to stand by him. Baffled, Addison looked at the woman's feet.
Wheelies? Seriously?
She looked up, and felt something in her stomach clench as she took in the woman's face, and her bright blue eyes. She was extremely pretty, Addison thought as she assessed her new colleague. Beautiful, even. And her hair was a gorgeous blonde with -
Addie, What the hell are you doing? Pull yourself together! She thought as she mentally snapped herself out of it, realising she was staring. This did not appear to phase the blonde, who's mouth broke into a happy dimpled smile.
"Hi!" She chirped, extending a hand. "Pleased to meet you Dr Montgomery, I've heard many a legendary tale!"
Finding herself smiling, Addison took the hand and was surprised to find the handshake was strong.
"Thank you! I hope you're ready for neonatal, it'll be nice to have someone to hand."
She felt the sideways glance from the Chief, who up until this point had heard her defiant protests of not needing anyone, she was fine on her own. She shrugged at him, releasing Arizona's hand. He shook his head slightly. Attendings and their arrogance.
"Oh you bet, I'm super excited to be working here." She gestured round, before directing her gaze straight back at Addison. "super."
Addison felt that clench in her stomach again as blue eyes met grey, and her brow furrowed as she pondered whether Arizona's words had double meaning, but the blonde simply smiled again.
"Right.. Well now that you're err, acquainted, we can commence the day!" Chief Webber said, bemused at the slightly awkward pause he had just witnessed.
"Dr Robbins if you'd like to follow me and I'll give you the grand tour! Dr Montgomery." He nodded goodbye.
"Of course!" Arizona began to follow, before turning back towards Addison.
"See you later then!" She gave a parting smile before wheeling after the chief. Addison watched her go, completely at a loss to what the hell she had just felt.
Arizona Robbins was in a cheerful mood. The hospital was great, the people were nice, and the surgeons were top class. And she had just been informed she would be working with an incredibly hot one for the next few months. Not too shabby.
Currently, she was sitting in the canteen, catching up with old friend and colleague Teddy Altman – another bonus of working here, she already had a good friend to rely on.
Her blue eyes scanned the place, assessing the other hospital staff, getting a feel for who was who and the general layout of the social groups.
"...So yeah, thats the story of me and Henry. And I'm honestly so glad I chose him in the end, he really is amazing." Teddy gushed. "You'll meet him soon enough, I think the two of you will really hit it off, he's hilarious."
"He sounds lovely" Arizona smiled. "I'm glad you're happy." She caught a red flash in the corner of her eye as the attractive woman she had met this morning walked past, tray in hand. Arizona couldn't help but notice she sat alone.
"Hey Teddy, you ever worked with Dr Montgomery?" She asked.
"Sure, a few times." Teddy replied with a mouthful of roast potatoes. "She's nice. Why?"
"She just seems.. I dunno, sad." Arizona mused, watching her eat quietly.
Teddy scoffed. "Well I'd be sad too with a husband who didn't want me."
Arizona raised her eyebrows, feeling a slight pang at the word 'husband' "Oh?"
"Yeah Derek Shepherd, neuro. Or 'McDreamy' as he's known round here. The guy with the perfect hair over there." She jerked a thumb over her shoulder.
"The one staring at that blonde girl?"
"Staring at Meredith? Yeah That'll be him." She made a grim face. "That's the one he really loves, and everybody knows it. Poor Addison."
"Addison." Arizona tested the name out loud. It sounded nice. When she looked back over, she realised the redhead had been joined by a darker skinned woman and a stern looking blonde. Teddy followed her gaze.
"That's her best friend Callie Torres, ortho, and her girlfriend Erica Hahn, cardio." She muttered the last part "and a pain in the ass."
"Oh they're a couple? Nice. But Addison is... She's completely straight huh?" She tried her best to sound nonchalant and casual about it. Teddy wasn't fooled.
"Jeez you've been here what half a day?" She laughed. "Yeah, she's straight – well as far as I know she is – so don't go getting yourself into trouble lusting after her"
Arizona opened her mouth to protest, but Teddy continued
"Especially since you'll be working with her over the next few months! So whatever little quest you have to get her into bed, shut it down right now." She stuffed more potatoes in her mouth. "It could get ugly." She said, and made a face to show she was joking.
Arizona just rolled her eyes and continued to watch the red head, who every now and then would cast sad eyes over to her husband and his perfect hair. Arizona sipped her coffee. Still watching.
Damn.
