Bathed In Moonlight.

I stepped through the doorway of the Astronomy Tower and into the soft starlight filling the room. I looked out the window, my eyes following the same path as that of the boy who sat on the window ledge. For a moment I gazed at the midnight sky, the moon watching serenely over the twinkling stars. As I watched, clouds appeared, announcing their imminent approach with a low rumble. I tore my eyes from the oncoming thunderstorm and looked at the boy sitting on the window ledge.

He looked away moments later and my eyes connected with his, stormy and grey. At exactly the same moment the storm broke, lighting illuminating the scene for a second as all was still, frozen as we looked at each other. Silver clouds seemed to swirl ominously in his eyes, and I was rooted to the spot, unable to tear my eyes away from his, turbulent and terrifying, yet thrilling at the same time. The rain began to fall in torrents from the sky as the lighting faded, leaving behind the soft glow of the moonlight.

"Draco…" I spoke, and my voice was so quiet that it was barely heard, even in the silence of the night, so far above the rest of the castle. I reached out a tentative hand and laid it softly on his arm. At my touch something inside him seemed to shatter, the façade of arrogant pride crumbled, and his shoulders slumped, eyes closing to temporarily hide the tempest of uncontrollable emotions. I watched as the rain began to fall from those entrancing stormclouds. First his eyes seemed to shine and shimmer as if in imitation of the stars above us, and then the tears were spilling from his eyes and streaming silently down his face.

I moved closer and wrapped my arms protectively around him. He slid his arms around my waist and buried his face in the crook of my neck.

"Shh…" I murmured soothingly, holding him close. "It'll be okay."

"What if it had been you?" he whispered brokenly, clutching me tighter, "I love you so much…" I slipped two fingers under his chin and tilted it up from my shoulder to look up at me.

"No matter what happens, I will always love you." I promised, looking straight into his eyes to show him I meant it, before brushing my lips softly across his, salty from tears. His eyes fluttered closed, and tears clung to his long lashes, glittering in the soft moonlight. I drew him close, wrapping him in my arms once more.

"They're dead…" he breathed into my neck, "…Dead…" I moved my hand in slow, soothing circles on his lower back.

"There was nothing you could do. It's not your fault Draco."

"I should have saved them."

"Look at me," I told him. He remained motionless so I cupped his cheek, damp from tears, with my right hand and softly turned him to face me. "You know you couldn't have done anything Draco, there's no point blaming yourself." He was silent for a moment before slowly straightening up.

"You're right." He said, an acceptance slowly entering his eyes. "I tried…"

He stood and lifted his chin, eyes swirling, hair reflecting the glow of the full moon, and the tears on his cheeks sending droplets of moonlight scattering across the room.

Bathed in moonlight…He had never looked more beautiful.
