a/n: I know, these are all unusual pairings, but they are all pairings I enjoy, and I felt like writing a short horror story…warnings: character death, OOC, angst. Disclaimer on my profile; enjoy!

Sacrifice

Neji didn't look up when he heard footsteps approaching his table.

"Neji."

Neji stared in to his cup of coffee, and wished that the person in front of him would go away.

"Neji, I'm sorry, but you know it would never work. We could never be together."

Neji ducked further behind his thick brown hair. What could he say? He'd known, from the very beginning of his infatuation with Uchiha Itachi, that it would come to this. He'd never had a chance to hold the other man's heart.

"Neji."

Finally, Neji spoke. "What?"

"Won't you say something?" Itachi pleaded.

Neji fell silent at that.

"Neji…"

"What? Do you want me to forgive you? Is that what you want?"

"I don't think I'm doing anything wrong," Itachi frowned.

Neji half sighed and half sobbed. "You are such a bastard," he gave a watery chuckle. "I'm not forgiving you. You never even gave me a chance to love you."

"Neji, I'm trying to protect you."

"I don't want to be protected," Neji said coolly. He couldn't scream, he couldn't shout, not here in a public place. "I just want you."

"Neji."

Neji shook his head and shoved his chair back. "This is so stupid. Just…forget it. Good luck with Shisui. And I swear to God, I hope that every time you see a branch member, you think of me, and you think of everything we could have together." Neji ran out of the coffee shop in tears, leaving Itachi alone at the table.

He knew why Itachi had never given him a chance. It was because of the brand on his forehead; no one would approve of the heir to the Uchiha family running off with a low-class servant of the Hyuga. That was why he never had a chance to hold the other man's heart.

Back at the shop, Itachi released a long breath.

It was all for the best. He pulled out his phone and dialed Shisui Uchiha's number.

"Did you do it?"

"Yes."

"Good." There was a click, and Itachi was met by the annoying beep of the dial tone. He swallowed hard, and prayed for Neji's happiness.

Far away, a man watching a crying boy with brown hair and white eyes picked up his cellphone. He spoke briefly, nodded, hung up, and pulled his gun out of his pocket. The boy turned around, as if he knew what would happen. Before the boy could scream, the assassin fired the gun three times. Neji fell where he stood, having died instantly.

The assassin hopped on to a motorcycle and zoomed away in to the city. No one would suspect him of the crime. Uchiha Shisui grinned viciously behind his helmet. Itachi was such a fool; he'd believed that Shisui would uphold his end of the bargain: if Itachi broke things off with Neji and started dating him, he would leave Neji alone. Neji was Itachi's singular weakness, and Shisui hadn't hesitated to use it.

As if he could risk such a threat to his love life. He chuckled darkly as he roared in to the Uchiha grounds; it was time to deliver some shocking news to his new lover.

End

a/n: This is definitely one of the weirdest things I've written, and it was totally a spur of the moment story. I hope everyone enjoyed, and feel free to check out the rest of my works! Thanks for reading, and don't forget to review on your way out ;)
