You think he is not real, invented to
calm little children as they sleep.
You say he sprinkles gold sand into
your eyes to help your dreams.
You are completely wrong.
He is nothing like that he is pale and gaunt
with eyes that shine like dead, faraway stars.
The Creator of Nightmares, he feeds off your
despair, black sand used to cement your
eyes closed as he searches. He forever
roams your mind, always looking. He
yearns for her, Queen Mab, the one who brings
sleep, his only true love. She stole his heart
and ran away into the mortals dreams,
leaving a pit so black and deep it rots inside
him day by day... So now he searches
your dreams, hoping to hold her once more.
Stretching your imagination and
scanning your darkest memories and desires
just to see if she had left an imprint in your mind.
Clawing his way through swamps of information
re-living what you have lived or wished to.
Sometimes he finds her and he speeds forward,
pulling you ever deeper into sleep and dream. At
times he gets carried away, the mortal breathing
their last breath as they go to Death. But he never
catches her, always a step slower as she floats off to
another dream. So he roams, never sleeping; hiding
in the edges of mind when you are awake. But when
Night falls, tired eyes droop and the clock chimes twelve,
you know he is there, sharp nails hungrily shredding
for her. So remember this when you wake in the night
drenched in sweat and heart beating erratically, be
glad yet fearful as you close your eyes; he may not
have caught her, but she could have finally ended her
race.
And he is there, waiting and watching for his chance.
