The End

Prologue:

Everything was in slow motion; nothing was real. Fred wasn't lying there; he wasn't motionless the remains of his last laugh still on his face. The world wasn't slowly but surely coming to an end. It took that moment of despair for her to realize that she had known the end was coming.

The beginning of the end had started when Harry had broken up with her for some stupid, noble reason. At the time she had understood. He was Harry and she realized he could not be happy unless the world was safe. Then, when he arrived at he Burrow a month later, when she saw his face for what felt like the first time the end didn't matter. She was whole again if only for a moment because even if one man she loved was there, her father and brother were late. When she told him this she could see in his eyes that he was blaming himself, stupid, noble git. But everyone was accounted for within half an hour. Everyone that is except one, the one no one had thought to worry about.

Mad-eye the wizened old auror wasn't there, and as Lupin passed out the glasses of fire whiskey she drank and thought of him. He was Mad-eye, the indestructible force that they all thought couldn't die. He was the one whose constant vigilance would save them all, and he was dead.

The end didn't stop there though, oh no, the end wouldn't leave her alone. It followed her to Hogwarts. It haunted her every step and yet she remained oblivious until the night of the final battle when Hagrid was carrying Harry's body up to the castle.

She'd cried herself to sleep almost every night worrying about Him yet when she saw him for the first time in almost a year she didn't cry at all. Instead she made a promise to then end, a promise that she would live for Harry, and for Fred, and for Mad-eye all of whom had not deserved the end they'd gotten.
