Author's Note:

I'm a bad person. I have not updated Fear or Revelations in ages, and I am so, so sorry to anyone who is, or was, reading those. Yeah... I'm real busy, and my writing style has changed a little, but I promise I'm not abandoning them. Honest. Just gonna take more time to update. :) Anyway, hope you guys like this story - I really enjoyed writing it!

Whispers in the Dark

Sometime in the night, Yuu dreams of a darkness so heavy he can barely breathe. He dreams of the metallic tang of irony blood, creeping up his nose and down his throat, the sting of a needle biting into his flesh.

He dreams the sliding of metal, cool against his bare skin, tracing a line of fire down his torso, his arms and legs, and when he wakes, his back is always arching upwards, as if away from chains.

Usually when he wakes, he can remember nothing at all.

It's during a night where he dreams longer than usual that he hears, and remembers, the shadowy figures with the too-clear silhouettes and the too-dark faces speaking.

It's when he wakes up, mind full of the familiarly unfamiliar fragments of the dream and heart empty with strange pain, an unreasonable sense of loss and meaninglessness, that he remembers enough to think.

He thinks that it's the memories, old and buried but still there, still painful, of his time in the vampire city. He thinks that the blood he smelt must be his, or the other children's, in the stinking breath of a vampire, the needle in his skin the drawing of blood from his veins.

He thinks the pain of the knife on his skin must be a sort of survivor's guilt, his way of pretending to die at the hands of the vile creatures, because he still feels heavy with the regret of being unable to save anyone, because the pain of loss dogs his every step.

That's weakness though, disgusting and terrible, because death means wasting the life and freedom they fought so hard for - the freedom that Mika and the children never got.

(Yuu thinks many things, but now there's one thing that never makes sense.)

(The vampires never called him a test subject.)

Author's Note:

I dunno if Yuu remembers being experimented on, but I figure not. Still, evidence definitely points to him being a guinea pig, and I thought it'd be fun to write about him having subconscious memories about it.

Hope you liked it - please drop a review or two; it'd really make my day. Story ideas are welcome, too.

God bless!
