Bella grieved when Sirius died.
When Sirius was a baby, Bella watched over him when her parents were out with Aunt Walburga and Uncle Orion. She loved the way Sirius had soft curly black hair, just like her. Andy and Cissy both had different hair colours from hers, and she felt triumph that she finally has someone in the family that takes after her looks.
When Sirius was a toddler, Bella started Hogwarts. She remembers Sirius with his parents, standing at the platform sending her off. She never forgets that Sirius saved up the sweets he got for being a good boy over the summer, and handed them to her as a goodbye gift, telling her with his toothless grin, and the hair that was so much like hers, that he will miss her. And Bella told Sirius, be a good boy.
When she was back from her second and third year, Sirius with the soft curly black hair and the strong good looks so much like her begged for her to tell him stories about Hogwarts, that was when Sirius still believed in all the great stories of Slytherin and blood purity, and together with Regulus, looked up at her in awe. But her young cousins couldn't hide the bruises and scars from her, and with a bit of probing, her scared, frightened cousins confided in her that Uncle Orion beat and tortured them when they didn't listen. Bella told Sirius that was the way Uncle Orion used to make them strong, so they will grow up strong men, worthy and fit for the name of Black. That no Black will be afraid of a little beating and torture, and strong men will not cave in to beatings and torture. And so when Bella went back to school, Sirius listened to her and never caved in to the beatings and torturing and scolding, and Bella constantly mailed to Sirius healing salves, pain potions, and soothing oils. Secretly, of course, because no Black is afraid of pain.
Bellatrix came back home from her fifth year of Hogwarts a changed woman. She found out her name meant "female warrior", and rumours of a certain Dark Lord were flying. A Dark Lord that supports and condones the beliefs of blood purity, and she was smitten with the idea of this lord. She stopped playing with Sirius, brushing him off whenever he tried to talk to her, obsessed with the idea of the dark lord and blood purity, and really, she's too grown up to play with little boys like Sirius who has no idea of what is going on in the world. Sirius started to look for Andromeda, the one with the nice smiles and warm hugs.
By the time she has graduated from Hogwarts, Sirius was the white sheep in the Black family, infamous for questioning the noble and most ancient beliefs of the House of Black, and sneaking out to fraternise with muggles. Bella, trying to bring back her baby cousin with the soft curly black hair, had a fight with him to which Bellatrix finally spat out that muggles are filth and if Sirius fraternises with them then he's filth too and no cousin of hers, and Bella watch as her baby cousin with the soft black curls so much like hers, becomes Andy's baby cousin with the warm, gentle eyes so much like hers. And Bella will never tell anyone, but something inside her clenched and then died when the light for her died in Sirius's eyes. But still, Bellatrix proudly raised her head, because no Black is afraid of pain and Blacks do not associate with filth.
The year Sirius started Hogwarts was the year Bellatrix was betrothed to Rodolphus Lestrange, and the dark lord's ideals were attracting more followers. Bellatrix heard that Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor and turned up her nose in disdain. But when nobody was there and nobody was looking, Bella mourned. She mourned for the boy with the soft black curls like hers who once upon a time idolised her and begged to be told stories of the great Salazar Slytherin. She mourned for the boy who now held warm, gentle eyes so unlike hers.
But not really. Because Sirius's Bella died with the light in his eyes, and the female warrior Bellatrix Black fears no pain and stands upright. And when a huge black dog showed up at her wedding scaring off the guests (Grim! It's the Grim!), she reached out and petted it because she only saw the soft black curls so like her own in the shaggy black hair of the dog. Bellatrix only laughed mirthlessly when her mother fretted over a cursed marriage, but Bella only saw the soft black curls and warm gentle eyes.
And then Andy was blasted off the family tree, and there was neither light nor warmth in Sirius's eyes. And Bella always thought that Sirius is so much like her, not just the soft black curls, or the strong good looks. Sirius and she were always the fighters. They fight for what they believe in, they fight against everything, for a piece of sanity, to feel alive, accepted, or maybe, they just fight to feel the pain, because no Black is afraid of pain. But Bellatrix thought, serve them right for associating with filth.
And when Sirius Black ran away from home, and Aunt Walburga blasted his name from the tree shrieking bloody blasphemy, Bellatrix laughed. Bellatrix laughed and laughed and laughed, because of course, Bella was crying and screaming, Bella will miss Sirius, just like how Bella misses Andy, every day. But Bellatrix told everyone that she is so proud of her only sister making a respectable pureblooded marriage to a Malfoy, and so proud of her only cousin joining the ranks of the Death Eater, pledging to serve the one and only Lord.
And when they brought her past the cells of a man with soft black curls so like her own, there were only two pairs of cold black steel staring into each other. But Bella was screaming, and Bella was crying, Sirius, I told you to be a good boy!
Now Sirius is laughing and come on, you can do better than this! And Bella is proud. Proud that Sirius is the same as her, with the soft black curls, strong good looks, and no fear, never fear. Because Blacks fear no pain and fear no fear. And strong men worthy of the Black name never cave in. But Bellatrix is angry, because of course I can do better than this! And she screams in triumph (but Bella, Bella is screaming in pain and in anguish) when Sirius falls through the veil, pruning the family tree, she thinks, and she is so sure that her family will be so proud of her.
But Bella. Bella screams and Bella cries, and Bella finally feels pain, and she doesn't want to be Black anymore, because Bella killed Sirius. Bella killed her baby cousin with the soft black curls and strong good looks so much like her.
And Bella grieved when Sirius died.
And Bella died when Sirius died.
