Swan Song

She placed the phone back on the receiver. The sound of hell hounds illuminated the quiet room as she began to sob softly. She began to unbutton her coat, then folding it on the bed next to her suitcase. She would have no need for it where she was going.

A small knock was placed on the door and a muffled 'room service' hit her ears. She hesitantly looked through the peep hole in the door. Pressing her palms, feeling the warmth of the door. Once again, this time closer, the hell hounds howled. Her devil's bane would only hold them off for so long.

The blonde maid smiled cheerily outside her door. Quickly she swung the chain open and lifted the handle. She only opened the door slightly placing a fake smile upon her face.

"Can I help you?" She said politely.

"Just here bringing you fresh towels ma'am and to turn down your bed for you." Her smile was bright and pleasant. Bela let her in to the room, shutting the door behind her. The maid headed straight for the bathroom. Bela moved back toward the bed to remove her suitcase and jacket. Placing them on the chair in the corner she turned around to see the maid heading for the bed.

"Just a few more moments miss and I'll be on my way." She quickly began to turn down the sheets and ready the bed. But Bela wouldn't sleep there. She was pretty sure she wouldn't be sleeping from now on.

The hell hounds were in the lobby she could feel their presence in the lobby attempting to sniff her out. They'd find her soon, hopefully this poor girl would be gone.

Suddenly a voice from the hallway permeates her tight quarters. "Daisy?" It's a female voice clearly searching for someone. The maid perked up and quietly excused herself. Bela relaxed and moved closer towards the door.

"Georgia, I'm in the middle of something."

"Rube says you have to pull out he made a mistake. He says you gotta leave now, Daisy." There was another exchange which Bela couldn't distinguish over the howl of the hounds. They had sniffed her out. She started silently crying if only she had been brave enough to say no. To turn down the deal.

But it had been for the best. That wretched man she called father was gone and now he would never harm her again.

The woman, Daisy, quickly swiped back into the room and finished her task. She chimed in a 'have a good night' almost as quickly as the door slammed.

And there she was. Alone. With only the mysterious bits of conversation she had heard from the doorway. She figured the maid wasn't actually a maid. A scavenger, someone out for something she had until they realized it was too late. She already belonged to something else.

The hounds were now scratching at the door. She wasn't sure how long the devil's bane would work. Her knees were pulled up to her chest as she wrapped her arms around them. Her tears were now falling more freely.

The door busted open and the hounds paused, growling ferociously.

She traded all her pain and fear for this, an eternity in Hell. But Bela couldn't help but question if was it all worth it?

She closed her eyes and she knew when she opened them the answer would still be the same. Yes, it was all worth it.
