Jet and Jasliene were fighting again.
I just sighed and rolled my eyes.
I was sitting on a branch a few feet above them and several away, spying for Honey. She had a date (guess who with) and had promised to take care of the younger kids the next time it was my shift. The leaves had fallen, but there were enough branches in front of me for me to see them, but them to not see me.
I also had a bet going with Longshot, and this could help me win.
Anyway, they were yelling about something – probably his hair again – and it was starting to get a little boring.
I sighed quietly. My cheek started to itch.
I slid my right hand out of its glove and scratched at it, making the paint flake. I'd run out of my normal stuff and was planning on making more tomorrow, but until then I was using some kind on flower that somehow grew at this altitude, crushing it, and mixing it with water and something Granyt added to help it stick.
I used Granyt's formula in my normal paint, so apparently I was allergic to the flower. To the point of having a rash that made it look like I'd smeared said paint over half my face.
Longshot suggested I take it off, but I hadn't gone a day without wearing it since I started, unless it was for cover work. I wasn't gonna start now.
I slipped my hand back into my glove, gripped the branch again, and looked down.
They were kissing.
A smile spread over my face until it hurt. I covered my mouth with one hand and bit down on the glove, ignoring the taste of the paint.
I took the glove out of my mouth, lips pressed together, and grabbed the branch above me.
I stood up and jumped from tree to tree, running along the branches until I reached one above a platform. I dropped down and automatically started jumping up and down, still trying to not straight-up squeal.
"Yes! I win! Longshot owes me a new dagger! Woot!"
"Eh hem?" a voice said behind me.
Oh, shit.
I spun around. Jet and Jasliene were leaning against one of the trees, Jet looking mildly annoyed, Jasliene looking amused.
"Hello," I said meekly.
Jasliene walked over to me. "You know, if there were still leaves on the trees, this would make a great disguise." She pinched my cheek.
I swatted her away and looked at Jet. "Okay, what's my punishment?"
His expression turned from annoyed and amused to just plain confused. "Punishment?"
"You know, for spying on you."
He rolled his eyes. "Oh, please. We knew you were there the whole time."
I raised an eyebrow. "So why do you look so annoyed?"
"She dragged me over here." He was pointing at Jasliene.
"So you didn't wanna come, but she convinced you? That's why you're mad?" I noticed Jasliene was smirking.
"No, I mean she literally dragged me over here."
I laughed at the expression on his face, which just made his frown get deeper. Jasliene joined in, making him storm off.
She looked back down at me, still chuckling. "So, why were you spying on us?"
I looked up at her through our very large height difference.
"Honey had a date," I explained.
She smiled. "So it was her idea?"
I nodded. "She even has a relationship name for you two."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Jetliene," I explained.
She looked amused. "That's actually a really good one. As opposed to Honuke. And Pewels."
I nodded, smiling. "Even Quin."
She grinned. "Or Smellershot."
I frowned. "Smeller-what?"
Her eyes widened. "Uh, nothing." Her eyes flickered around. "Nothing at – Hey, there's Longshot! Doesn't he owe you a new dagger, or something?"
I spun around. Sure enough, the archer was walking across the platform, seemingly obvious to us.
I could hear Jasliene fleeing, but ignored her and ran towards the soon-to-be-broke boy.
"Hey, Longshot!"
