Author's notes: This is written from Arwen's point of view; the Arwen I saw
in the movie. Haven't read the books in their entirety yet, so…

My love…
I see you striding at the front of the Fellowship to lead them out of the valleys and onto the path of your collective destinies. We talked before, when we were both younger, of travels to meet our destinies instead of fate seeking us. We spoke of birthright and duty, dreams and nightmares, love and hate and all the emotions that exist betwixt the two. We spoke as two friends contemplating the future. You said you would not allow the sins and faults of your forefathers to contaminate you. Your path would be clear.
It was that night I gave you my heart.
I saw a fire burning in your soul. It leapt out of your eyes and warmed my heart until there was nothing but you and me and the purist distillation of love. I know you. I know you better than the woman who gave birth to you. She but gave birth to your body; I have seen the birth of your soul. You will redeem what has been lacking in men these centuries, my darling. You will redeem glory and honor, and you will do so simply by acting as a friend, and a protector.
You are striding to meet your destiny.
Tiny nine dots, I see the Fellowship far below and far away. You are still at the lead. I cannot see that, but I can feel that.
When you came to say goodbye this morning, you watched me with wary eyes. I know that you wish me to not give you my heart. You have told me time and again that you do not want my immortality, that it is not a fair trade. But, Aragorn, my love, it is. It is but the barest sacrifice that I am able to give to you, to our love. I would rather live one life with you than hundreds without you. Those who live short lives, my love, are able to burn with fire, ache with love, and shout with happiness until the peaks ring. Life is fleeting and to enjoy it, love during it, and achieve through it is the most profound thing that one can do.
And I want these things with you.
The leaves in the trees flutter around me and the horse as, finally, I am able to see you no more. You are on your path, and I remain here on mine. My love is with you; my heart is with you. And I will remain here. I know you will not come back until you have become all that you are destined to be, and I respect that. The mists from the waterfalls will still reach you for a little while, my dearest heart. So I lift my hand to my mouth and throw a kiss to the mist. As nature touches you, so does my kiss. I will await your return, for I know in my deepest heart of hearts you will return.
With a heart heavy of loss, I turn the horse to the path by the falls to the gates of Rivendell.
