Hikaru, my love…Alone. I am so alone. Wet, cold and scared. And in pain. Hikaru had gone up ahead, and I lost sight of him. I began to run to catch up to him, but I tripped over a tree root and sprained my ankle. Then it started to rain. So I crawled slowly and painfully to the shelter of a huge tree nearby, which is where I now wait, praying that Hikaru will soon realize that I am not with him. Tears begin to trickle down my cheeks and I bury my face in my hands. I am so scared. Hikaru and I are hardly ever parted, and even when we are, it is not for this long. We always together.
Suddenly, I hear the breaking of twigs nearby, and a familiar voice.
"Kaoru?! Where are you, Kaoru?!"
"Hikaru?" I call out, not believing my ears.
I see a tall human shape come running towards me. I feel the heat radiating from his warm skin as he envelopes me in his arms.
"Come on," he says, grabbing my hand to pull me to my feet. "Let's go home."
He starts to rise, pulling me with him, but I grab his shirt.
"Hikaru, I can't!" I say.
"Why not?" he asks me gently, kneeling in from of me. "Are you hurt?"
"I turned my ankle a while back."
I point to my now massively swollen ankle, and I hear him give a small gasp. Removing his shirt, he tears it into small strips, which he then ties tightly on my ankle. I start to protest, saying that he will be cold, but he just presses his soft lips to mine.
"I'll be fine," he tells me in a quiet voice.
I nod, and he squats down and picks me up: I feel him place an arm around my shoulders, and the other under my knees. Then he lifts me carefully – as if I were an infant. He cradles me to nim, and I sigh in relief. He carries me to the car and puts me into the back passenger seat. Then he shuts the door and gets in on the other side. Our flaming hair is plastered to our heads. His pale skin seems to give off an unearthly glow in the darkness. He buckles himself in and then, pulling me into his lap, tells the driver to take us home. He holds me close, and suddenly, I burst into tears.
"Kaoru, what is it? Is it your ankle?" He sounds worried.
"I was… I was so scared…" I sob.
He caresses my cheek and kisses me softly. I wrap my arms around him, grateful for his love. I feel a blanket being pulled over me, but I push it away and cover the both of us instead. I look up and see Hikaru's shocked expression and smile. He smiles back. Warm, comfortable and at peace, I close my eyes and allow sleep to take me.
