When I heard the gunshot, I was frozen. My view of the gun that had been pointed straight at me had been suddenly obscured. By another's form.
I cried out his name in horror. He turned slowly toward me, a mixture of pain and peace on his face. I caught him as he fell. We sunk to the ground together, my arms around him. A scarlet pool was forming around us. Tears ran down my face, cold as ice.
I called his name desperately. His eyes opened and he looked at me. "I'm sorry." he whispered. And his eyes began to close.
"No, no, please!" I pleaded with him, pulling him into an embrace, holding him as though if I got him close enough that he wouldn't have to go. Silver light shone down from a streetlight. A raindrop spattered next to us, more following it.
I looked at his face. His eyes were open again. "Thank you." Thunder boomed in the sky above us but I didn't hear it. I didn't hear anything other than his voice. "Thank you…"
But I wasn't ready for goodbye. I wasn't ready to let him go.
But there was nothing I could do now. I cried. I cried until the rain stopped. I cried until the sun rose over the buildings. I held him to my shivering body and wished. I wished with all my being that this hadn't happened.
I wished that the flat wasn't so quiet. I wished that my heart would heal. I wished that I could hear his voice again. Just once more.
Sleep came and I heard the soft sound of a violin. And I smiled. "Thank you…"
