Finally... Oi, Mate

-o-

It all started here, at the Opassa Beach… didn't it?

The sound of the ocean waves gently washing ashore flooded her mind with memories. Her eyes softened. Her gaze slowly trailed from the sparkling ocean to the word her slender finger had thoughtfully traced in the sand earlier. She chuckled to herself, hugging her knees as she sat there.

Ironic, yes…

She was back here again, but she knew—it was definitely not the same again.

At least not for me…

The approaching footsteps startled her out of her reverie, causing her to turn around swiftly. Immediately she gasped. Her blue eyes widened and her lips unconsciously parted into a smile. Amidst the breeze, her long blond hair and her white dress fluttered as she leaped to her feet.

"Oi, mate!"

The young man halted. "Er… yes?" he responded hesitantly.

Oh right, he doesn't know me. Bugger!

Her smile faded. "Oh, er… nothin'." She turned back to look at the ocean. "Sorry. I… I thought you were a friend I knew," she answered lightly.

He still looked exactly the same, wore the same. Just as she had remembered him by. Then again, what could she have expected? Time had hardly passed… his time. She sighed.

"Oh," was all he replied. He strolled closer, but was careful to maintain a distance appropriate between strangers. He also gazed into the ocean, his cerulean bangs under that familiar bandana swaying in the wind. Despite mixed emotions welling in her chest, she couldn't help but to softly chuckle again. This was so him; he never spoke much after all.

"Are you waiting for a friend?" he finally asked.

She paused for a moment before replying. "Nah, I'm lookin' for him actually. I thought he might come here."

And here you are…

Shifting his attention to her, he asked, "Is he from Arni Village? Maybe I know him."

She burst out laughing. "Actually, you might! He looks a lot like you, mate," she said, grinning at him.

Damn right ya do.

He looked confused. "I don't know anyone who looks like me… sorry, I don't think I can help you," he apologized.

She walked to him. "No worries! I'm sure we'll meet someday. But hey—" she extended a hand. "What's yer name?"

"Serge."

"I'm Kid. Nice to meet ya, mate!"

They shook hands and smiled at each other.

Back where she stood, the word "time" lay scrawled in the sand.

A/N: I suddenly had an urge to write again, and this is a short piece that I began a long, long time ago and never completed. I could use more time to add more, but I wanted to keep it short and sweet AND post it up before I lost all inspiration to write tomorrow. :) Comments, feedback and suggestions are appreciated! Thanks for reading!
