I did a full 360 turn, desperately searching for a way out. The heat was becoming too intense and in turn it started scorching my tanned skin.
"Help! Please, somebody help!" I cried out. However the roar of the flames drowned out my hopeless attempt to be saved. In my desperate last endeavor I tried to bend the fire away from me, but seeing as I was weak, my effort was in vain. Uncontrollable sobs violently racked my body as I realized this was the end for me. I fell to my knees as I waited for my inevitable death to reach me. I screamed out in agony as the hunger-filled flames lapped at my skin.
"Jaz!" A voice rang out above the sound of the fire burning all life. "Jazlyn!" It yelled again. No matter how hard I tried, I could not answer the voice. The only sound that came out of my mouth was the blood-curdling scream filled with suffering. "Jaz! Come on wake up please!"
My eyes shot open to a tanned boy holding me in his arms and lightly shaking me. The boy's frantic expression grew calm as he saw I was awake and he wrapped his arms around me tightly.
"Oh thank Agni it was just a dream," I exhaled and reveled in the fact that it was just a nightmare from the past. The boy set me back down on my bed, which was more of just a pad and a few blankets than an actual bed, and he pressed his hand against the side of my face.
"Well, it seems your fever just broke Jaz," he smiled and removed his hand after feeling my temperature. "If you don't mind though, I'd like you to stay here for just a couple more days so I can keep an eye on you. I don't"
"No problem Jet. I don't know what I'd do without you," I truthfully told him while trying to sit up and give him another hug. I was too weak though from being sick for two weeks with whooping cough, so Jet grabbed my arms gently and helped pull me up. My thin arms encircled his neck and I breathed in his unique scent of burnt wood, the smell of the forest after it rains, and blasting jelly.
"You want me to sleep over here with you Jaz?" he asked quietly as he hugged me back.
"Yeah, I suppose that would be nice since I'm all shaken up still." Jet had insisted that I sleep in his room, or tent since the Freedom Fighter's hideout was among the trees, because he wanted to look out for and comfort me while I was sick.
Jet really was the greatest friend I could ask for. Ever since I could remember, him and I got along so well. Our houses were next to each other and we would always play together. Well, that was at least until the fire nation came. They destroyed everything in their path; even my home and family. Jet was the one who saved me from the soldiers, he was my hero. Since then he has always looked after me with the utmost care.
"Night Jaz," Jet said as he lay me down on my 'bed' and rubbed my back to lull me to sleep. My eyes grew heavy and I felt the tension caused by my nightmare drift away. "I will never let anything hurt you, I promise" he whispered in my ear. If it weren't for the fact that I was half-way asleep, his hot breath against my neck would have made shivers run up and down my spine teasingly.
