Buzz, Pop, Crunch
Rose heard the strange noises the minute she returned home.
Working for Torchwood meant encountering all sorts of aliens so she remained wary as she followed the sound to the kitchen. As she drew closer she breathed a sigh of relief. She would know the first noise anywhere. What on earth was the Doctor up to now?
Buzz, Pop, Crunch
He must have heard her approach as the sounds ceased a second before she opened the kitchen door. He was sitting at the table, an angelic smile on his face, a look of innocence to those who did not know him better.
Around him, the floor was layered with a mixture of raw corn kernels and fluffy white popcorn.
"Doctor, what's your explanation for this then?" she asked in a voice that clearly showed she was low on patience.
"Weeell, I was testing my reflexes," he replied and proceeded to show her.
Tossing a raw kernel in the air, he aimed the sonic screwdriver at it. Instantly it went pop and as it fell back to earth he lunged forward, catching the morsel between his teeth with a loud crunch.
Rose stifled a giggle. "Uh huh. So why the mess?"
"Isn't it obvious, Rose? It would appear that I haven't quite perfected my technique yet."
This time Rose did laugh out loud. "Right, that your excuse is it? Doctor, what's wrong with using the popcorn maker?"
He flushed red. "Um, well…"
"You broke it, didn't you?" she accused.
Suddenly he was babbling, the words coming thick and fast in his haste to explain. "It wasn't my fault. Well, it was, but I really didn't expect that to happen. This twenty first century technology just doesn't go well with my sonic and I was trying to improve the design but then it kind of melted and went poof."
Rose rolled her eyes. Although she was annoyed, there was no point in getting mad at him. This was the Doctor. He would go barmy if she reined in his nature to be curious. She leaned forward and kissed his forehead. "Right, clean up the mess and you can buy me a new popcorn machine out of your pay next week." Without a further word, she turned and left the room.
The Doctor, thinking he'd had a lucky escape, raised his eyes to the ceiling. "Blimey," he said to the empty room. "Good thing she didn't see the blender."
