Sam saw the bruise, easily noticeable against the paleness of his brother's skin. Another fight at school, maybe, because how else would Dean have gotten a black eye? He and Dad hadn't gone out on a hunt in just over a week, so it hadn't been some monster or demon who had attacked Dean.

But then, Dean hadn't exactly gone to school that day, or at least, that's what Sam had come to conclude when Dean had showed up at his school at lunch, twenty dollars freshly won in a cheap poker match with a bunch of other teens, telling him to hurry up because they only had an hour and McDonald's was at least twenty-five minutes away.

Dean said he had just cut out at lunch, after he had won the money, so he could buy his little brother a decent lunch – something better than the sandwiches made hastily each morning before Dean and Sam headed off to school. Said he wasn't planning on going back that afternoon, because it was just English and French -- and he already knew English, and French was just a stupid waste of time.

He didn't have a black eye then. They'd gone to McDonald's, each getting fries and a burger, getting the orders to go so that Sammy wouldn't be late. No need for John to know about Dean's cutting out of school and making Sam late on top of that.

When John came home later that night and threw an ice pack at Dean, muttering to him that he had better not skip school again, Sam was beginning to think of a very different reason as to why Dean's left eye was swollen shut – and it wasn't the nicest conclusion, but it seemed to be the one that fit the best.
